A Secular Stronghold Reconsiders the Pulpit

Sweden is experiencing a rare spiritual awakening. Church attendance among young people has doubled over a four-year period to 34 percent, according to national survey data highlighted by CBN News.

Long regarded as one of the most secular nations globally, the Scandinavian country watched religious belief decline continuously after World War II. Religious observance hit historic lows by the turn of the century. Furthermore, a 2011 survey revealed that most members of the Church of Sweden did not believe in Jesus. Faith was frequently dismissed as a sign of ignorance in a heavily secularized society.

The Rise of Generation Z Faith and Digital Preaching

That dynamic has shifted dramatically. The country is now seeing a deep hunger for faith, traditional values, and community among Generation Z, driven heavily by social media platforms that bypass traditional media filters.

In a surprising cultural indicator for 2025, Swedish youth voted Jesus Christ as Influencer of the Year, according to CBN News coverage.

Christian leaders point to several catalysts behind this youth-led religious revival. Pastor and program host Josef Barkenbom credited social media with allowing believers to share the Gospel free from the control of Sweden’s secular cultural institutions. “Because of social media, they can’t filter it anymore,” Barkenbom told CBN News, noting that projects like his Why Christian initiative have brought people to faith from across the nation.

Packed Pews and Rapid Confirmations

Philip Falk Azevedo co-founded the Jesus Conference in Sweden with friends after receiving what he described as a vision during prayer. He noted a powerful current of change within the young generation.

“People are hungry for the Word of God, and they want the truth,” Falk Azevedo told CBN News, adding that attendance at the event surpassed 3,000 by its third year.

Other leaders report similar surges in engagement. Marco Strömberg, a Christian leader and entrepreneur who launched a business school for Christian entrepreneurs and a leadership development initiative called The Calling, stated that confirmation classes in the Lutheran Church are now fully registered within 24 hours.

Combating Isolation Through Community and Belief

For many young Swedes, the turn toward faith stems from a profound sense of isolation under secularism. Strömberg observed that a society built entirely on individual permissiveness has left Gen Z feeling empty and lost, prompting a search for traditional values, family, church, and community, particularly among young men.

Oscar Jakobsson, a young Swede cited in the reporting, explained that he previously used drugs to medicate the loneliness and lack of meaning he felt before accepting Christ.

After his own conversion, Jakobsson invited his friend Zeke Hanzén to church with the explicit intent of talking him out of Christianity. Instead, Hanzén reported experiencing a powerful spiritual presence that brought him to tears.

Decades of Prayer Meet Modern Momentum

Long-standing prayer movements are viewed by believers as foundational to the current shift. Lars Enarson, a Bible teacher living in Israel, told CBN News that intercessors had prayed day and night, 24-seven for this awakening to come to Sweden.

With national surveys confirming an upward trajectory in belief and youth church attendance, organizers and faith leaders believe the spiritual landscape of the historically secular nation is undergoing a lasting transformation.
