Poet’s Verse reflects Generational Sentiment
Dublin-based poet Mikey Cullen penned a poem, titled ‘A Voice for Change,’ inspired by Independent candidate Catherine Connolly, stating she ”speaks for me and my generation.” Cullen, 28, has performed at numerous events and festivals across Dublin and Ireland.
Cullen’s support stems from a feeling of disconnect between young people and the current governing parties in Ireland. He observed a significant trend of emigration among his peers, driven by issues like the housing crisis and the decline of cultural venues.
Housing Crisis and Cultural Spaces fueling Emigration
Cullen noted that while some emigration is natural, a considerable portion is prompted by challenges facing young people in Ireland. “Most of my friends are living in australia now. Some would have gone naturally, but a lot of it is because of things like the housing crisis and the closing down of cultural spaces,” he explained.
He believes Connolly uniquely understands and represents the values and aspirations of Irish youth. “But it feels like Catherine Connolly does embody and reflect the values and wishes of the young people in this country,” Cullen said.
Connolly’s Campaign: Inclusive and Visionary
Cullen contrasted Connolly’s campaign with those of other candidates, finding her more attuned to the realities on the ground.”I think she’s in touch with the current zeitgeist, whereas the other candidates were more removed from what’s happening on the ground,” he stated.
He highlighted the inclusivity of connolly’s campaign, noting the active involvement of diverse community groups, including “Students for Connolly,” “Artists for Connolly,” and “carers for Connolly.” Cullen also praised Connolly’s emphasis on cultural aspects and her articulation of a clear vision for the country.
Representing Future Voters
As a secondary school history and English teacher, Cullen emphasized the importance of a president who represents the interests of teenagers currently too young to vote. “Most definitely. We need to think about what kind of country are they coming into,” he said.
he acknowledged a widespread sense of political disenfranchisement among young people. “A lot of younger people feel disenfranchised from politics,” Cullen observed.
A Vision for a New republic
Cullen believes connolly offers a compelling vision for Ireland, one that prioritizes the needs of ordinary citizens. “That’s why Catherine Connolly is important. She speaks with a vision for Ireland and a new republic that benefits the ordinary people,” he said.
He concluded that Connolly possesses a unique quality that resonates with his generation. “People naturally gravitated towards her and there’s something about her that speaks to people of my age and my generation.”
