Sports Medicine Forum to Focus on Nutrition for Athletes

VIENNA – The Sports Medicine Department at the University of Vienna and the Austrian institute for Sports Medicine are hosting a series of lectures and discussions centered on the theme of “Sport and Nutrition.” The forum, held several times a year, is open to the public.
Experts will share their knowledge and experience in sports and medicine in a format designed to be accessible to everyone. University professors Michael Trauner and Jürgen Scharhag will moderate the upcoming edition.
Nutritional Supplements: Benefits and Limits
The forum will begin wiht a lecture by University Professor Daniel König, who will discuss the use of nutritional supplements in sports.König will address the promises made by products such as protein shakes, vitamin capsules, and mineral tablets, which claim to enhance performance, improve regeneration, and accelerate muscle growth.
König will explore the evidence supporting these claims, clarifying when the use of supplements is beneficial and when it is not.
The Gut Microbiome and athletic Performance
University Professor Michael wagner will then discuss the intestinal microbiome, a topic of growing importance in sports science.Wagner will explain the microbiome’s influence on physical performance and how training and nutrition can effect bodily processes.
Food Intolerances in Athletes
In the final lecture, University Professor Johann hammer will address food intolerances in athletes.Hammer will discuss what athletes need to consider regarding food intolerances and recommend appropriate diets and nutritional supplements.
Hammer will address the prevalence of food intolerances such as fructose, lactose, and gluten intolerance among both the general population and athletes. He will also discuss which diets and supplements are recommended or should be avoided for athletes with food intolerances.
