Sportdigital, a German sports broadcaster, has secured exclusive German-language rights to 15 matches from the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup, bringing the spotlight to North and Central American club competition for a German audience. The deal, confirmed by Sportdigital to Broadband TV News, includes coverage of games featuring Vancouver Whitecaps midfielder Thomas Müller, a former star for FC Bayern Munich.

The agreement kicks off with two first-round knockout ties featuring the Whitecaps against CS Cartaginés on February 19 and February 26. Sportdigital1+ will broadcast the matches live. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

The Concacaf Champions Cup, established in 1962, is the preeminent club competition for teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Winning the tournament carries significant weight, automatically qualifying the champion for both the 2029 FIFA Club World Cup and the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup. This dual pathway underscores the growing importance of the competition on the global stage.

For Sportdigital, the acquisition represents a strategic expansion of its international football portfolio. The channel already broadcasts the AFC Champions League Elite and South America’s Copa Libertadores, positioning itself as a key destination for “Champions League” level competition within the German-speaking market. “By adding the Concacaf Champions Cup, we have expanded our extensive and high-quality international football portfolio with another premium property,” said Bendix Eisermann, Managing Director of Sportdigital. “Alongside the AFC Champions League Elite and the Conmebol Libertadores, this is now the third Champions League competition on Sportdigital1+, which is very good news for our viewers and platform partners.”

The 2026 Champions Cup features a constellation of high-profile players beyond Müller, including Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez of Inter Miami, Marco Reus of LA Galaxy, Son Heung-min of Los Angeles FC, Anthony Martial of Monterrey, and Keylor Navas of UNAM Pumas. The presence of these established stars is expected to draw significant viewership and elevate the profile of the tournament internationally.

Sportdigital’s move comes as interest in Concacaf competitions continues to grow, particularly with the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The increased exposure is expected to benefit clubs and leagues throughout the region, fostering greater fan engagement and commercial opportunities.

The acquisition of these rights by Sportdigital also highlights a broader trend in sports broadcasting: the increasing fragmentation of rights and the rise of specialized channels catering to niche audiences. Rather than relying on traditional, broad-reach broadcasters, leagues are increasingly opting for targeted distribution strategies to maximize revenue and reach specific demographics. Sportfive, a German-based international sports marketing agency, plays a role in these rights distributions, operating in sports consulting, partnership sales, marketing and sponsorship activation.

Looking ahead, Sportdigital is also set to broadcast the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup exclusively in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. The Gold Cup, kicking off on June 14, 2025, is the premier national team tournament of the Concacaf region, featuring 16 teams including a guest appearance by Saudi Arabia. SPORTDIGITAL will broadcast all 31 matches live. Uli Pingel, Editor-in-Chief at SPORTDIGITAL, stated, “There’s no summer break for our viewers. By securing the rights to this exciting tournament, we’re delivering top-tier soccer entertainment for nearly a month.”

Philippe Moggio, Concacaf General Secretary, emphasized the importance of expanding the tournament’s reach into European markets, stating, “Bringing the Concacaf Gold Cup to fans across Europe through SPORTDIGITAL is an exciting step as we continue growing the global reach of our competitions.” The tournament will culminate in a final match at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas on July 6, 2025.

The growing partnership between Concacaf and Sportdigital signals a commitment to increasing the visibility of North and Central American football in Europe, offering German-speaking audiences access to a compelling slate of club and national team competitions. The inclusion of established stars like Müller, Messi, and Suárez is expected to further enhance the appeal of these tournaments and attract a wider viewership.
