The Astrodome: A Revolution in Sports and Spectacle
A Dome of Their Own
In April 1966, The New Yorker‘s Roger Angell experienced his first indoor baseball game at the newly opened Astrodome in Houston, Texas. He wasn’t solely focused on the game itself, but captivated by the stadium’s futuristic features-the orange spacesuits of groundskeepers, the rainbow seating, and the revolutionary AstroTurf field. Angell’s observations, published in his article The Dome

The first official Astros home game was played on April 12, 1965, against the Los Angeles Dodgers, drawing a crowd of over 47,000 (Houston Astros Official Website).
