Spotify is launching User Notes, a new feature allowing users to attach personal memories and context to individual tracks, according to an announcement by the company on July 30, 2026. The tool transforms standard music libraries into journal-like spaces by letting listeners document why a song was added, when they first discovered it, or what event it soundtracked.
How User Notes Work on Spotify
According to reporting from TechCrunch, the feature is available to users aged 16 and older on both free and premium tiers in select markets. Listeners can access User Notes by navigating to a self-created playlist or a playlist containing tracks they have added, tapping the three-dot menu next to a specific song, and selecting the “Add note” option. Users can then type a brief caption and save it.
The resulting notes remain visible to anyone who views the playlist, with the author’s display name linking directly to their profile. Spotify stated in an email to TechCrunch that the feature aims to preserve the moments tied to audio consumption. Over time, these notes paint a picture of the music listeners love and the moments that shaped it,
the company said, as reported by TechCrunch.
Platform Differentiation and Additional Updates
The introduction of User Notes gives Spotify a distinct journaling capability that separates its platform experience from competitors like Apple Music and YouTube Music. GSMArena notes that the streaming service is also expanding note functionality by adding Playlist Notes to top editor-curated playlists, providing deeper editorial context alongside user-generated memories.
Alongside User Notes, Spotify debuted Running Mode for premium subscribers in select countries on July 30, 2026. According to TechCrunch, Running Mode automatically queues up songs based on different phases of a run, matching track selections to a user’s listening preferences and running pace.
