Jakarta (Antara) – Spotify has considerably expanded the functionality available to ‍its free users globally, allowing them to search for and play ⁣specific songs, as well as play songs shared by ⁣friends and artists on social media platforms. This marks a substantial change from the previous limitations imposed on free accounts.

According to a report by TechCrunch on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the new‍ features are branded as⁣ “Pick &⁣ Play,” “Search & Play,” and “share & Play.”

New Feature Breakdown

• Pick⁤ & Play: free‍ users can now directly select and play individual songs within the spotify submission.
• Share & Play: ⁢ users can play songs discovered on social media, such as those shared via Instagram Stories‍ or Notes.

Previously, ⁤free Spotify users were restricted to listening to music in shuffle mode with a limited number of skips. This change represents a major shift in SpotifyS approach to its free tier, possibly⁤ aiming to convert more users to paid subscriptions.

Impact and Potential strategy

Spotify’s ⁢decision to⁣ loosen restrictions on its free tier could be a strategic move to compete with other music streaming services. By offering more control over ⁣music selection, Spotify aims ⁣to enhance the user experience for free listeners, making the platform more attractive⁣ and potentially driving conversions to premium‍ subscriptions. ⁣ The ability to play songs directly from social media⁤ shares also leverages⁤ the power of social recommendations, increasing song discovery and platform engagement.

The previous limitations on free accounts – shuffle-only playback and limited skips – were frequently enough cited as⁣ a major frustration for users. Removing these restrictions addresses a key pain point and positions Spotify as a more user-friendly option for casual listeners.
