Spotify’s Smart Reorder Feature Lets Premium Users DJ Their Playlists
Spotify is enhancing its “Mix” feature with Smart Reorder, a new tool designed to streamline playlist transitions for Premium subscribers. The update provides a quick way to automatically rearrange mixed playlists based on beats per minute (BPM) and musical key, aiming for a more seamless listening experience.
Last year, Spotify introduced the Mix feature, giving Premium users greater control over how their playlists sound, including customizable transitions. Since its launch, Spotify reports that Premium users have streamed over 220 million hours of mixed playlists, demonstrating significant user engagement with the feature.
How Smart Reorder Works
Smart Reorder operates within the existing Mix functionality. It analyzes the tempo (BPM) and key signature of each track in a playlist and then reorders them to create more harmonious and fluid transitions. This automated process eliminates the need for manual adjustments, allowing users to quickly optimize their playlists for a consistent flow.
The system prioritizes compatibility between songs, aiming to minimize jarring shifts in energy or tone. By considering both BPM and key, Smart Reorder attempts to create a more natural progression between tracks, resulting in a listening experience that more closely resembles a DJ mix.
Using Smart Reorder: A Simple Process
Accessing Smart Reorder is straightforward. Users simply open a playlist within the Spotify app, tap the “Mix” button, and then select “Edit.” The “Smart Reorder” button appears at the bottom of the editing screen. Tapping this button instantly reorganizes the playlist based on the BPM and key data available for each track.
It’s important to note that applying Smart Reorder will override any existing custom sorting on the playlist. Users should be aware of this before utilizing the feature, as it will alter the original order of their tracks.
Inspiration from Artists and Popular Transitions
To provide inspiration, Spotify is highlighting playlists curated by artists within its “Mixed By” hub. These playlists feature contributions from artists including John Summit, Becky G, Normani, Beéle, Mike Shinoda and Joe Hahn of Linkin Park, Odeal, GroovyRoom, and monte booker.
Spotify has also analyzed popular track transitions among its users (data collected between August 2025 and January 2026) to showcase the impact of effective sequencing. Some of the most frequently observed transitions include “Wake Me Up” (The Weeknd) into “After Hours” (The Weeknd), “Low” (Flo Rida) into “S&M” (Rihanna), and “No Lie” (Sean Paul) into “Adventure of a Lifetime” (Coldplay). These examples demonstrate how a well-timed transition can significantly enhance the overall listening experience.
Other popular transitions identified by Spotify include “Safaera” (Bad Bunny, Jowell & Randy, Ñengo Flow) into “EoO” (Bad Bunny), “Femme Fatale” (Mon Laferte) into “Perdón” (Camila), “Homecoming” (Lil Uzi Vert) into “20 Min” by (Lil Uzi Vert), “Dos Mil 16” (Bad Bunny) into “Vuelve” by (Daddy Yankee & Bad Bunny), and “euphoria” (Kendrick Lamar) into “TOXIC (with Skepta & Playboi Carti).”
Context and Competition
The launch of Smart Reorder positions Spotify within a growing trend of music streaming services enhancing audio transitions. Apple Music introduced its AutoMix feature last year, utilizing artificial intelligence to create automated DJ-like transitions. Spotify’s approach, however, offers more granular control, allowing users to customize transitions even after applying the Smart Reorder feature. YouTube Music currently lacks similar transition capabilities.
Smart Reorder builds upon Spotify’s existing playlist mixing tools, which were first introduced in August of last year. The feature is exclusively available to Premium subscribers, aligning with Spotify’s strategy of offering enhanced functionality as part of its paid subscription tier.
