SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. — A community in northern Virginia is mourning the loss of three high school seniors following a fatal single-vehicle crash late last week. The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the three students died at the scene after their car veered off the road and struck a tree.

The crash occurred around 11:46 p.m. On Friday, March 27, 2026, in the 5300 block of Lewiston Road in Spotsylvania County. According to authorities, the location is just north of the Lake Anna Elder Care facility. Deputies responded to the call and found a single vehicle with three occupants inside. All three were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators have identified the vehicle involved as a 2002 Mercedes coupe. Preliminary findings from the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office indicate that speed may have been a contributing factor in the incident. The Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit, along with the Virginia Department of Transportation, is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Victims Identified as High School Seniors

The victims were all seniors at Spotsylvania High School and were expected to graduate in the coming months. Authorities stated the students were ages 18, 17, and 17. One of the victims has been officially identified by family and officials as 17-year-old Kyle Derby. Family members told reporters that Derby was the driver of the vehicle and that the other two passengers were his childhood best friends.

In the days following the tragedy, a memorial has begun to take shape at the site of the crash. A cross placed near the tree bears the names of the deceased: Kyle, Dylan, and Antonio. The memorial under the tree has grown to include flowers, photographs, and baseballs, representing the friendships the three seniors shared. According to reports from the scene, their initials have also been carved into the bark of the tree where the vehicle impacted.

Community and School Response

The incident has deeply affected the local community, particularly the student body at Spotsylvania High School. Classmate Sara Edenton visited the memorial on Monday, March 30, noting the close-knit nature of the area.

Community and School Response

It’s a very close community in Spotsy. I feel like everyone knows everyone no matter whether you knew them personally or not. Everyone at least knows their names and so it is very hard for everyone.

Sara Edenton, Classmate

Edenton, who attended elementary school with Kyle Derby, expressed that she felt compelled to pay her respects to peers who were well-known in their graduating class. She described Derby as sweet and kind.

Spotsylvania County Schools were on spring break during the immediate aftermath of the crash. Principal Robert Marchetti addressed the school community in a letter, urging families to support one another during the break. He advised parents to check in with their children regarding the deaths of their peers, noting that grief reactions can vary significantly.

Children respond to death differently and their reaction will depend on the relationship that they had with the person who died, their age, and prior experiences with loss.

Robert Marchetti, Principal

The school system announced that counselors would be available on campus when students returned on Monday. School leaders encouraged parents to watch for changes in behavior, such as students appearing unaffected, asking repeated questions, becoming withdrawn, or showing changes in sleep or eating patterns.

Ongoing Investigation

As the investigation continues, officials have extended condolences to the victims’ families, friends, and the school community, calling the loss a profound tragedy. The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office has not released the names of the other two victims at this time, though the memorial at the crash site reflects the community’s knowledge of their identities.

Authorities continue to analyze the scene on Lewiston Road to determine the full sequence of events that led to the vehicle leaving the roadway. The involvement of the Crash Reconstruction Unit suggests a detailed examination of the vehicle dynamics and road conditions at the time of the incident.

The tragedy has sparked a broader conversation within Spotsylvania County about road safety and the impact of such losses on tight-knit school communities. As the graduation season approaches, the absence of the three seniors will be felt acutely by classmates and faculty alike.
