Sri Lanka‘s National People’s Power Party Wins Parliamentary Elections

The National People’s Power Party, led by President Dissanayake, has won the parliamentary elections in Sri Lanka. The election commission announced the results on November 15.

The National People’s Power Party secured 159 out of 225 parliamentary seats. The United National Power Party came in second with 40 seats. The People’s Front Party, which held the majority in the previous parliament, won only 3 seats.

Dissanayake expressed gratitude to the citizens who supported the party for national revival through a social media post.

The new parliament will hold its first meeting on November 21, during which it will elect a new speaker.

The parliament operates as a unicameral body. The previous parliament was established in August 2020. In September 2023, Dissanayake announced the dissolution of parliament and called for new elections on November 14.
