SS Rajamouli, the acclaimed director behind cinematic behemoths like Magadheera, Baahubali, and RRR, has revealed a deep-rooted connection between his filmmaking and the epic of Ramayana. The filmmaker discussed the influence of the ancient text on his upcoming film, Varanasi, slated for release in April 7, 2027.

Rajamouli shared his insights in a recent interview with Polygon, stating, “All my films are inspired by the epics of (Lord) Rama.” This revelation offers a new layer of understanding to his work, suggesting a consistent thematic thread running through his celebrated filmography. Varanasi, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, is particularly notable for its direct engagement with the Ramayana narrative.

The director explained that Varanasi will feature “an actual episode from the Ramayana itself,” presenting it in a new cinematic light. This isn’t simply a loose inspiration, but a deliberate adaptation of a specific story within the epic. Rajamouli acknowledged the potential for audience unfamiliarity with the source material, but emphasized his responsibility as a storyteller to ensure accessibility.

“This proves my job as a storyteller to make you not feel lost, to make the film in such a way that it’s not taxing your mind,” Rajamouli said. He believes that even without a comprehensive understanding of the Ramayana, audiences can connect with the emotional core of the story. “You might not understand the whole story of Rama, but there is no need to. If you understand the emotions of the characters, you’ll understand what is happening.”

Beyond the mythological framework, Varanasi is fundamentally a story about human relationships. Rajamouli highlighted the central theme of a father-son dynamic, drawing parallels to the relationship between Rama and King Dasharatha. The film also explores the evolving connection between Rudra, played by Mahesh Babu, and a mysterious thief named Mandakini, portrayed by Priyanka Chopra. “It’s so endearing and relatable,” Rajamouli noted. “Even when the canvas is gigantic, it’s these emotions that people will resonate with.”

The casting of Pṛthvīrāj Sukumāran as Kumbha adds another layer of intrigue to the project. While details about his role remain limited, his involvement suggests a significant antagonist within the Ramayana-inspired narrative. The film promises a blend of grand spectacle and intimate character studies, a hallmark of Rajamouli’s previous successes.

Rajamouli’s comments come after he shared a teaser for Varanasi last November, sparking considerable anticipation among fans. The teaser hinted at the film’s mythological underpinnings, prompting speculation about its narrative direction. His recent statements confirm those suspicions and provide a clearer understanding of the creative vision behind the project.

The production of Varanasi is being handled by K.L. Narayana and S.S. Karthikeya under the banners of Sri Durga Arts and Showing Business. This collaboration suggests a significant investment in the film’s scale and ambition, aligning with Rajamouli’s reputation for delivering visually stunning and emotionally resonant experiences.

This marks the first time Mahesh Babu will be portraying a character rooted in mythology, adding another dimension to his already impressive filmography. His portrayal of Rudra is expected to be a key element in the film’s success, drawing audiences eager to see the actor tackle a role of this magnitude.

Rajamouli’s consistent return to the themes and narratives of the Ramayana underscores the enduring power of the epic in Indian culture. His ability to reinterpret these ancient stories for a modern audience is a testament to his skill as a storyteller and his understanding of the cultural landscape. Varanasi is poised to be not just a cinematic event, but a cultural moment, bridging the gap between tradition and contemporary filmmaking.

The director’s emphasis on emotional resonance, even in a film steeped in mythology, suggests a deliberate effort to connect with audiences on a human level. By prioritizing character development and relatable themes, Rajamouli aims to create a film that transcends cultural boundaries and speaks to universal experiences. As Varanasi draws closer to its release, anticipation continues to build, fueled by the promise of a visually spectacular and emotionally compelling cinematic journey.
