This initiative stems from SSU’s selection as one of only 30 institutions nationwide to participate in the IBM SkillsBuild AI Freshmen HBCU Initiative.
New AI Course Integrated into First-Year Experience
Beginning this academic year, all SSU freshmen are required to complete “Getting Started with Artificial Intelligence,” a three-hour course developed by IBM. The course provides a foundational understanding of AI concepts, explores its practical applications across various industries, adn addresses the critical ethical considerations surrounding this rapidly evolving technology.

The partnership with IBM extends far beyond this introductory course. according to Marcus S.Cox,SSU’s Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs,students who complete the initial course will gain access to over 1,000 free courses,paid micro-internships,personalized learning pathways,and mentorship opportunities-all designed to prepare them for real-world careers in the AI field.this represents a considerable investment in student success and career readiness.
