St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, is poised to shine as it hosts the Canada Games, and officials are confident visitors will be captivated not just by the athletic competition, but by the unique charm and welcoming spirit of the city itself. From its compact, walkable layout to the renowned hospitality of its residents, St. John’s is preparing to offer an unforgettable experience.
A Compact City with Big Appeal
One of the most striking aspects of St.John’s, according to those involved in the Games preparations, is its accessibility. “I think people are gonna really be struck by how compact the city is [and] how you can get anywhere very, very easily,” says Sheilagh O’Leary Breen, a key figure in the Games institution. This ease of navigation allows visitors to maximize their time, experiencing a wealth of attractions without the hassle of extensive travel.
Beyond convenience, the city boasts a rich history as the oldest in North America, brimming with heritage and a vibrant cultural scene. “People are also going to have an opportunity to really take in a small city that’s very compact and has so many amenities,” Breen added. This blend of past importance and modern convenience creates a compelling draw for first-time visitors.
Newfoundland & Labrador Hospitality: The Heart of the Experience
But the city’s infrastructure is only part of the story. The genuine warmth and friendliness of Newfoundland and Labradorians are consistently highlighted as a key attraction. “I think [visitors are] going to find – and most people do – the hospitality that Newfoundland and Labradorians are famous for, and the people of St. John’s love to show,” Breen explained. “We love to host events, we love to have people visit us. Tourism is a big part of our province and [so is] the friendliness and openness.”
This isn’t just promotional rhetoric. Many attendees are specifically excited to experience the local culture firsthand. As Le May Doan, another Games official, noted, “I’ve talked to so many people that this is their first time going to St. John’s. I’m excited for the Games to happen, but I’m also excited for people to witness the Games in a place that thay haven’t been, because that’s part of the Canada Games – exploring our country, seeing new things, meeting new people and understanding our various communities.”
Exploring Beyond the Competition
St. John’s encourages visitors to fully immerse themselves in its natural beauty and cultural offerings. Breen emphasizes the willingness of locals to assist and share their city. “Enjoy the landscape, the culture, and the heritage but if you need any assistance, anything at all, just ask someone. That doesn’t have to be somebody with a volunteer sweater. You ask people in St. John’s a question and you’ll get the answer – and whatever help you need.”
The city’s artistic community is notably noteworthy. St. john’s is home to a talented array of artists and a thriving arts scene, offering a diverse range of experiences for culture enthusiasts. From galleries and studios to live music venues and theatrical performances, there’s something to inspire every visitor.
Whether it’s exploring Signal Hill, wandering through the colourful streets of downtown, or simply enjoying a traditional Newfoundland kitchen party, St. John’s promises a Canada Games experience that extends far beyond the sporting events. The city is ready to welcome the world and showcase its unique blend of history, culture, and unparalleled hospitality.
