Vatican City – A series of initiatives marking the 400th anniversary of the dedication of St. Peter’s Basilica are set to unfold throughout 2026, beginning February 20th and culminating on November 18th. The plans, unveiled by Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica and President of the Fabbrica di San Pietro, aim to enhance the spiritual and cultural experience for pilgrims and visitors while leveraging technology to broaden access to the Basilica’s rich history and artistry.

The anniversary year will commence with the inauguration of a new Via Crucis, the traditional Stations of the Cross devotion. The year-long observance will conclude with a Holy Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV, marking a significant moment of reflection on the Basilica’s enduring legacy.

A Multilingual Gateway for Global Pilgrims

A central component of the anniversary celebrations is the launch of a multilingual liturgical platform, developed in collaboration with the Dicastery for Communication and Translated, a company specializing in artificial intelligence-based language solutions. This platform will provide real-time, AI-assisted translations of key liturgical celebrations, accessible via smartphone. Visitors will be able to scan QR codes located throughout the Basilica to access both audio and text translations in their preferred language, eliminating the need for dedicated apps or equipment.

The system utilizes the live interpreting capabilities of “Lara,” Translated’s AI translation platform, promising to break down language barriers and foster a more inclusive experience for the Basilica’s international visitors.

Unveiling Hidden Spaces and Streamlining Access

Beyond the technological advancements, the anniversary will also see the opening of previously inaccessible areas within the Basilica complex. These include the entire terrace, offering panoramic views, and the Octagonal Halls, which house architectural models of the Basilica created by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and Michelangelo, alongside artifacts from the Basilica’s museum archive. This initiative aims to provide a deeper understanding of the Basilica’s architectural evolution and artistic heritage.

To manage visitor flow and preserve the sacred atmosphere, a new real-time booking system, dubbed “Smart Pass,” will be implemented. This system is intended to regulate access while ensuring a respectful environment for prayer and contemplation.

Expanding the Digital Pilgrimage

Cardinal Gambetti highlighted the expansion of the Basilica’s digital ecosystem, enabling pilgrims to share prayers and personal testimonies online. This initiative seeks to extend the spiritual experience beyond the physical confines of St. Peter’s, fostering a sense of global community among the faithful.

Spiritual Enrichment and Historical Reflection

The anniversary year will also feature weekly “Spiritual Elevations” – events combining prayer and sacred music – alongside pastoral lectures and scriptural reflections focused on Saint Peter, the Basilica’s namesake. A special pilgrimage route retracing the footsteps of Saint Peter and Saint Paul in Rome will be established, offering a historical and spiritual journey through the city’s Christian roots. A theatrical performance is also planned near the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29th.

Safeguarding a Legacy Through Technology

A collaborative project between the Fabric of Saint Peter and the Italian energy company Eni, titled “Beyond the Visible,” will focus on the long-term structural preservation of the Basilica. This initiative utilizes advanced technologies for integrated and permanent structural monitoring, ensuring the Basilica’s stability for generations to come. The project will also offer visitors an immersive experience, allowing them to learn about the Basilica’s construction and digital ecosystem.

A New Institutional Font: ‘Michelangelus’

In a nod to the Basilica’s artistic heritage, the Vatican will introduce a new institutional font, “Michelangelus,” inspired by the handwriting of Michelangelo Buonarroti. Developed by Studio Gusto, the font will be included in the Microsoft Office package, further disseminating the Basilica’s artistic influence.

Cardinal Gambetti concluded by emphasizing that the anniversary is not simply a commemoration of the past, but an opportunity for renewal. He drew a parallel to Pope Julius II’s rebuilding efforts, noting that today’s renewal can be achieved through technological advancements, ensuring that St. Peter’s Basilica continues to welcome pilgrims for centuries to come. He stated that celebrating the centenary is about “bringing back to the heart” what gives life and hope.
