St. Petersburg City Council Approves $55M for Tropicana Field Repairs Amid Rays Stadium Discussions
The St. Petersburg City Council held a meeting to discuss two key issues regarding the Tampa Bay Rays:
- Funding $55 million for repairs to Tropicana Field’s roof.
- Issuing $287.5 million in bonds for a new Rays stadium in St. Petersburg.
These funds are unrestricted, meaning any allocation for the Rays will reduce available resources for other public needs, including recovery from recent hurricanes.
Rays President Brian Auld addressed a letter sent to the Pinellas County Commission, expressing regret that its tone upset some members. He clarified that the timeline for roof repairs could surpass the $55 million estimate and that the team may not be ready for the 2026 Opening Day.
Decision on Tropicana Field Repairs
The Council reviewed a report stating that roof repairs would take 13 months, from February 2025 to March 2026, costing roughly $55.7 million. After insurance, the City will cover no more than $23.7 million. The report noted additional costs could arise from required acoustics work that will be evaluated separately.
Council member Gina Driscoll expressed concerns about unexpected expenses, stating, “Do we know if we have to replace any hot dog stand?”
Despite concerns, the motion to proceed with repairs passed 4-3. The approved resolution includes:
Four interfund loans totaling $23.73 million to finance the emergency roof replacement. The funds will come from various city funds.
Auld indicated that the Rays might not favor fixing Tropicana Field, as they are considering other options and may file a damages claim. However, they state a commitment to staying in the Tampa Bay area.
News indicates the Rays have halted plans for a new stadium by 2028. They might prefer not to fix the Tropicana Field roof, allowing them to consider other locations.
Decision on New Stadium Bonds
The Council is currently on recess and will discuss the stadium bond funding next.
