A Groovy Tribute on The Late Show
Annie Clark,known professionally as St. Vincent, performed a cover of David Bowie’s 1975 hit “Young Americans” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on December 18, 2023.The performance was part of the show’s new “Under the Covers” segment, which features artists interpreting songs they admire.
This isn’t the first time Clark has revisited Bowie’s work; she initially performed the song at the Love Rocks NYC benefit concert earlier in 2023. In a conversation with Stephen Colbert, Clark identified Erykah Badu, Doechii, and The slits as artists she’d be thrilled too hear cover her own material.
A Faithful Rendition with a Modern Twist
St. vincent’s version of “Young Americans” largely remains true to the original arrangement. However, she cleverly updated a lyric, substituting “Joe Biden” for “Richard nixon,” offering a subtle commentary on contemporary politics.
Continued Momentum Following Grammy Win
The performance arrives as St. Vincent continues to support her critically acclaimed and Grammy-winning album,All Born Screaming. She spent much of 2025 touring in support of the record.
