Standing Strong for Global Freedom: Spanish President Vows to Defend Democracy Worldwide, with Venezuela in the Crosshairs

September 17, 2024 Catherine Williams News

Spanish Government Commits to Defending Democracy in Venezuela

Pedro Sánchez, President of the Spanish Government, has reaffirmed his commitment to defending democracy⁤ worldwide, including in Venezuela. In a recent address to⁤ Congress, Sánchez emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values and called on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro ⁢to publish the ‌electoral records of the⁢ recent presidential⁢ elections.

The Spanish Government has been advocating for transparency and accountability in Venezuela’s electoral ⁢process, joining the majority of Western countries and European Union member states in this⁣ effort. Sánchez stressed that the publication of electoral records is essential⁣ for verifying the‌ results of the elections in an impartial and independent manner.

Defending Democracy and Promoting Transparency

Sánchez’s comments come amidst‌ a diplomatic crisis between Spain and Venezuela. While he did not⁤ directly address the crisis, his remarks underscore‌ the Spanish Government’s commitment to promoting democracy and transparency in all regions, including Latin America.

The Spanish Executive has been urging Maduro’s ‍government to publish the electoral records for ⁢over a ‍month, a move that would help to ensure the integrity of the electoral process and provide clarity⁢ on the outcome ⁢of the presidential elections.

Condemning Disinformation and Destabilization Campaigns

Sánchez‍ also⁢ denounced those who use foreign policy as a tool to attack the Spanish Government or divide citizens. He criticized the spread ⁤of disinformation and destabilization campaigns promoted by external actors, which can undermine democratic institutions and values.

The Spanish Government’s position ⁤on Venezuela’s presidential elections differs from that of the opposition⁢ Popular‍ Party (PP), which recently proposed a non-binding resolution declaring Edmundo González‌ the winner of the‍ elections. However,⁣ the Sánchez Government, in line with ‍the EU, advocates for the⁣ publication of electoral records to ensure a reliable and transparent outcome.

By promoting democracy, transparency, and accountability, the Spanish Government aims to uphold the values of democratic governance and support the people of Venezuela in their pursuit of a free and fair electoral process.
