In healthcare,innovation frequently takes center stage. However, at Stanford Medicine Children’s Health in Palo Alto, California, the new chief medical information officer (CMIO) is equally focused on the often-unseen work of maintaining consistent system performance.
“Stability and predictability are a big part of the systems that we use in healthcare,” Keith Morse, MD, CMIO, told Becker’s Hospital Review. “When doctors show up in the morning and they log into their computers, they need things to work every day like they expect them to work.”
This commitment to reliability is paramount, preceding more visible aspects of the role. Morse’s initial priority is ensuring seamless core functions – from 24/7 support teams to daily logins – for clinicians and patients. Together, his team is advancing projects poised to reshape pediatric care.
unique Challenges in Pediatric IT
Pediatrics presents distinct technological hurdles, and Stanford has a history of tackling complex issues. One prominent example is safeguarding adolescent privacy. California law, and increasingly federal regulations, place specific requirements on the handling of sensitive health information for minors.
“That change is inevitable, and we want change. There are immense opportunities for advancement in how we deliver care and in the IT systems that support that care,” Morse stated in the Becker’s interview.
He describes a “delicate rhythm” of preserving effective systems while exploring new possibilities, and believes Stanford Children’s offers ample opportunity to achieve both.
