Stanley Fischer, a prominent figure in macroeconomics, whose role included guiding central banks‌ in both Israel and the United States, died Saturday at age 81.‍ The Bank of israel released a statement expressing condolences.

Fischer⁢ served as vice chairman of the Federal Reserve from 2014 to 2017. ⁣Before that, he was governor ⁣of the Bank of Israel for eight years. His career also included positions at the Massachusetts Institute ‌of Technology ⁤(MIT),the International Monetary Fund (IMF),the World Bank,and ‍citigroup⁣ Inc.

As⁣ a professor, Fischer mentored numerous students who went on to become influential economic⁢ policymakers. ⁤This included former Fed Chair Ben S. Bernanke, former European Central ⁤Bank President Mario Draghi,​ and former U.S. Treasury secretary‌ Lawrence Summers. Kazuo Ueda, the current bank of ⁤Japan governor, and IMF chief economists Olivier Blanchard, Ken Rogoff, and maurice Obstfeld⁢ also studied under Fischer.
