Power Surge Halts Security and Baggage Systems
Passengers shared images on social media depicting dense crowds massing near terminal gates and passport control areas. One traveller took to X calling it a total systemic collapse
showing hundreds of people facing severe delays, noting that luggage belts were not working and security was clearing at a fraction of its usual operating speed. Another social media user, Sama, posted on X: This mess is Stansted Airport, in the so called first world. Double standards, as always.
Passengers Left Without Information or Basic Supplies
Travelers trapped inside the terminal criticized the lack of communication from airport staff during the outage. Traveller Jill Stakem told BBC reporters that people were held in a corridor for over 90 minutes with no seating or water provided, adding: It’s horrendous. No communication, no seating for people, no-one offering watering.
Passengers on flight FR1013 bound for Prague with Ryanair spent over two hours securing boarding passes and clearing security only to be told to leave their bags by a wall because manual loading had failed. The X user @northbanksyafc stated: We arrived at 11:45 and were in a queue to get our bags tagged for over an hour, then a further hour and a quarter getting through security.
They added: This is 2026 for goodness sake.
Infrastructure Failures Compound Weekend Travel Chaos
The power failure coincided with severe rail disruptions across the region after Storm Boelo damaged UK infrastructure. Metro.co.uk reported that Greater Anglia canceled numerous Stansted Express trains after fallen trees blocked lines connecting London to the airport. Furthermore, the severe weather saw London’s Diwali celebrations, scheduled to take place in Trafalgar Square, cancelled over safety concerns.

Airport Authorities Work to Restore Full Capacity
Airport officials confirmed that technical teams managed to bring most systems back online by late afternoon on October 25. Stansted Airport issued a statement indicating that operational teams worked to support affected passengers throughout their journeys. However, baggage and security checkpoints continued running below full capacity hours after the initial surge, and airlines faced lingering delays in returning lost items to stranded holidaymakers. They added: If your flight starts boarding, please flag down a member of staff.

Coming on the day after the general public are told by the government to store tinned food & bottled water, it’s shocking the resilience of an international airport in the UK is so flimsy. There should be a generator or large battery back up in place. This is 2026 for goodness sake.
