Giancarlo Stanton made a notable first rehab appearance for Double-A Somerset on Tuesday, collecting two hits and three RBIs. the Yankees slugger, sidelined this season with elbow tendon injuries, played designated hitter against the Portland Sea Dogs, a Boston Red Sox affiliate, in Bridgewater, N.J.
Batting second, Stanton walked, grounded out, then delivered a two-RBI single and an RBI single before being replaced after seven innings. Somerset won handily, 8-1.
Earlier Tuesday, in Kansas City, Mo., Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed optimism about Stanton’s rehab assignment but refrained from setting a firm return date. the Yankees were in Kansas City to start a three-game series against the Royals.
“he’s playing tonight. Probably play tomorrow. And then we’ll see about Thursday, if he plays again or what we want to do through the weekend,” Boone stated, emphasizing a day-by-day approach.
Stanton, 35, played in 114 games last season, batting .233 with 27 home runs and 72 RBIs. His postseason performance stood out, with seven home runs in 14 games, earning him the AL Championship Series MVP award. The focus now is on building up his body and ensuring he feels ready for regular season action, according to Boone.Stanton has already accumulated important at-bats in preparation for his rehab stint.
In other Yankees injury news, right-hander Marcus Stroman is slated to make a rehab appearance for Somerset on Wednesday. Stroman has been out since April 11 due to left knee inflammation.
Though, Jake Cousins’ rehab assignment was cut short after the right-handed pitcher experienced elbow issues. Boone reported that Cousins, who has been managing a strained right forearm, underwent an MRI. The team planned for Cousins to consult with Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad to determine the cause of the problem.
Cousins pitched in six playoff games for New York last season.
“I mean, considering he was into his rehab and build-up and now to feel something with the elbow, it’s concerning,” Boone said. “But again,I don’t want to overreact. We don’t have any data.”
What’s next
Stanton will continue his rehab assignment, with the Yankees evaluating his progress in two-day increments. Stroman aims to return from the injured list following his rehab start. The team awaits further information on Cousins’ elbow injury.
