Star Trek Celebrates 60th Anniversary With New Comic, Podcast and Cruise

Star Trek is officially launching its 60th-anniversary celebrations, marking six decades since the iconic science-fiction franchise first debuted on NBC as a one-hour television series in September 1966.
To mark the milestone, IDW Publishing is releasing a Star Trek 60th Anniversary Special that serves as a launching point for a brand-new ongoing comic book series. The publisher has enlisted an all-star roster of creative talent to bridge multiple eras of the franchise’s history. The special features writing from David Gerrold, Brian Michael Bendis, Mike McMahan, Ryan North, David F. Walker, Chris Fenoglio, Dana Gould, Dave Baker, Meghan Camarena, and Christopher Cantwell. The artistic lineup includes J.P. Buzio, Michael Gaydos, Michael Allred, Derek Charm, Isaac Escorza, Esau Escorza, Chris Fenoglio, Megan Levens, Nicole Goux, Mari Rolin, and Isaac Sánchez González.
A Historic Return for Franchise Veterans
The anniversary comic opens with a direct tribute story by David Gerrold alongside J.P. Buzio, Christine Franzen, and Clayton Cowles. Gerrold remains a connection to the television origin of the franchise, having penned the original series episode “The Trouble with Tribbles,” which introduced the famous furry creatures and marked the first professional script sale of his career. Gerrold’s comic contribution features a follow-up story centered on the character Harry Mudd and his ongoing troubles with android copies of his wife, Stella.
Additional creative teams are tackling other corners of the television and animated canon. Comedian, writer, and actor Dana Gould teams up with the Star Trek: Red Shirts art team of Megan Levens and Charlie Kirchoff to explore Scotty’s love life in a follow-up to the original series episode “The Lights of Zetar.” Meanwhile, writer Brian Michael Bendis joins forces with his Alias collaborator Michael Gaydos for a unique tribute centered on Lieutenant Hikaru Sulu, marking Bendis’s first Star Trek story. Ryan North and Derek Charm have crafted a story set within the visual and narrative universe of Star Trek: The Animated Series.
Expanding the Universe Through Scripted Audio
Beyond print, the franchise is expanding its audio offerings with the premiere of Star Trek: Khan, an all-new scripted podcast that explores untold events on Ceti Alpha V. The project chronicles the descent of Khan Noonien Singh from a superhuman visionary into the vengeful villain featured in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
Naveen Andrews, known for his work on Lost, voices the title role of Khan Noonien Singh. The voice cast also features Wrenn Schmidt as Lieutenant Marla McGivers, Sonya Cassidy as Dr. Rosalind Lear, and Star Trek veteran Tim Russ reprising his role as Ensign Tuvok alongside George Takei as Captain Sulu. New episodes roll out weekly on Mondays through November 3 across major podcast platforms and the official Star Trek YouTube channel.
