Star Wars at Comic-Con: Lucas Reveals the Force
George Lucas Unveils Vision for Narrative Art Museum at Comic-Con
San Diego, CA - Creator of the iconic Star Wars universe, George Lucas, offered a glimpse into his highly anticipated Lucas Museum of Narrative Art during a captivating panel at Comic-Con International 2025.Speaking to an eager crowd, Lucas described the museum as a “temple to the people’s art,” dedicated to celebrating the power and importance of storytelling across various visual mediums.
A Sanctuary for Storytelling
The museum, set to open its doors in a striking, curved architectural marvel, will house an eclectic collection spanning fine art, illustration, and popular culture. Lucas revealed that the museum’s holdings will include works by renowned artists such as Norman rockwell, N.C. Wyeth, frida Kahlo,Jacob Lawrence,Charles White, and Robert colescott. The collection will also feature beloved pieces from legendary cartoonists and comic artists like Winsor McCay, Frank Frazetta, and Jack Kirby, alongside exclusive items from Lucas’s own cinematic legacy.
“When you’re born, the baseline is fear,” Lucas explained, articulating his ideology behind the museum. “And as you go through life, you’re curious about things, but you’re especially curious about things you don’t understand, and thus that’s a threat to you. And as an inevitable result, you make up stories to make it feel good.” He emphasized that even science fiction, often perceived as mere fantasy, has become a tangible force through the power of narrative art.
Celebrating Freedom of Expression
Joining Lucas on the panel were esteemed figures from the film and art world, including oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro and veteran production designer Doug Chiang, a key architect of the star Wars aesthetic.
“What’s remarkable about George is that he leads from the heart, and this museum is him,” chiang remarked, highlighting the personal passion driving the project.
Del Toro, whose latest film Frankenstein is slated for release in November, spoke passionately about the museum’s commitment to freedom of speech. “We are in a critical moment in which one of the things they like to disappear is the past, you know, and this is memorializing a popular, vociferous, expressive and eloquent moment in our visual past that belongs to all of us,” he stated. Del Toro also lauded comics as a medium with “a lot of social conscience,” humorously noting that comic artists were “the first one to punch a Nazi” in thier work.
The sentiment was echoed by attendee Jesse Goldwater, who traveled from Los Angeles.”What a panel!” he exclaimed. “They are the embodiment of Comic-Con itself, without them Comic-Con wouldn’t exist.”
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art promises to be a unique destination, offering a comprehensive exploration of how stories shape our understanding of the world and ourselves.
