Starlink‘s Price Hikes in Nigeria Spark Affordability Concerns

Lagos, Nigeria – Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink, is facing renewed criticism in Nigeria after announcing another round of price increases. Teh new pricing structure, effective instantly for new customers and starting January 27, 2025, for existing users, marks the second price hike in less than a year.

Starlink cited the need to “enhance it’s network infrastructure and maintain the delivery of high-quality internet service across the country” as the reason for the increase. Under the new pricing, the Standard (Residential) plan will cost ₦75,000 per month, while the Mobile – Regional (Roam Unlimited) plan will be priced at ₦167,000. The Mobile – Global (Global Roam) plan will see the steepest increase, jumping to ₦717,000 per month.

This latest price hike follows a controversial 97% increase attempted in September, which saw the monthly fee surge from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000. At the time, Starlink attributed the increase to inflation.

The September price hike sparked backlash and regulatory scrutiny, with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) initially threatening sanctions against Starlink for an unauthorized increase. The NCC later retracted the statement, leaving the situation shrouded in confusion.

Facing public pressure, Starlink temporarily suspended the September price hike and offered credits to affected customers while navigating the regulatory challenges.

Starlink launched its operations in Nigeria in December 2022,becoming the first African country to receive the satellite-based internet service. while the service has been lauded for providing internet access to remote and underserved areas, its pricing model has consistently drawn criticism.

Many Nigerians argue that Starlink’s prices are out of reach for the average citizen, particularly in a country grappling with economic hardship. This latest price increase is likely to further fuel these concerns, raising questions about the accessibility of Starlink’s service for the wider population.

“It’s crazy! I remember when they first launched, it was ₦38,000,” said Ade, a Lagos resident. “And then they tried to hike it to ₦75,000 back in September. They claim it’s because of inflation, but many people think Starlink is just trying to capitalize on being the onyl major satellite internet provider here.”

Bisi, another Lagos resident, echoed Ade’s concerns. “It’s not like there are many alternatives, especially for people in rural areas who lack access to conventional internet. It’s grate that Starlink is bringing internet access to those areas, but at these prices, it’s just not affordable for most Nigerians.”

The constant tug-of-war over Starlink’s pricing is likely to continue unless there’s some serious competition in the satellite internet market. Until then, reliable internet will likely remain a luxury for many nigerians.

Starlink Price Hikes: A Conversation

Ifeanyi: Chima, did you hear about Starlink raising their prices again? can you believe it?

Chima: No way! Seriously? they just did that a few months ago. What’s their excuse this time?

Ifeanyi: Apparently, they’re saying they need to “enhance their network” and keep the service quality high. sounds like corporate jargon to me.

chima: Yeah, that’s what they said last time to right? Remember when they tried to jump the price from ₦38,000 to ₦75,000? There was a huge outcry, and even the NCC got involved.

Ifeanyi: Exactly! and they ended up backing down and offering credits to people who were already paying the higher price. Now they’re raising it again, even higher this time. It’s crazy. the cheapest plan is now ₦75,000!

Chima: Wow, that’s truly unaffordable for most Nigerians. Especially considering the current economic situation.

Ifeanyi: Exactly! I spoke to Ade, who lives in Lagos, and she was saying the same thing. She feels like Starlink is taking advantage of being the only major satellite internet provider here. This service is suppose to bridge the digital divide, but at these prices, who can afford it?

Chima: You’re right. It just doesn’t seem fair to the average person, especially those in rural areas who might not have access to other options. What are they supposed to do?

Ifeanyi: I don’t know, Chima. I really don’t know. It feels like they’re prioritizing profit over accessibility, which defeats the purpose of bringing internet to everyone.
