He continued, adding further context to his and his Memphis-bred groupmates’ decision to go all-in for this volume. “It was essentially half of an album added on to what we did originally, and then we gave this chapter some closure with 4 Life & After and added eight more songs.
“So when we set out to do the album, and we got to 16 songs, it was just kind of trimming the fat if there was anything that we just didn’t feel like 100% about. And we kind of agreed that a couple of songs that were similar enough that they didn’t necessarily need to be on the same project.But to that point, only one song got scrapped.”

Step Brothers 1 is not who we are now, and vice versa. Who we are now ain’t who we were then. So I think that’s part of why the sound is different, and in that sense, we just let that flow. We don’t sit and say, “Hey, we should do this, or we should sound like this.” We just go in, and we let creativity take control.
Starlito: Yeah, I agree. I think our sound has grown with us sonically. I think the tone of the music is a little bit more serious than it was, maybe at the beginning of the series.We were for sure younger; we started the series 15 years ago. And the subject matter, just life as it comes at us, I think, leads us in a direction that we make the music that kind of mirrors or parallels our experiences.
At the time we met and started working together, I think it was a little bit more like spastic energy ’cause it was hyper-lyrical, and a little more punchline-driven. His voice hasn’t changed much,but certain nuances of his music and the way he delivers it have changed a little bit.
One day, it was like, ”Oh, we both can rap” or “You can spit.” So it was almost like trying to prove that. And now we’re trying to make the truest song the way we just met in the middle, with where we’ve gone through. And as we’ve grown together as a family, I think it shows in the music.
And we, a lot of times, in finding a common ground, it may be a little bit more stoic. It may be something more soulful. But even with that, I think we try to find a balance as we certainly know we’re capable. And at all times, we need something with the low end. We need something that’s going to move a crowd. We need something to perform ’cause at the end of the day, we’re in this together. We have a vision and goals, and otherwise. But, namely, I just think it mirrors where we are.
What role did collaboration play for you throughout this year?
starlito: I think our project is a true collaboration and that there is no part of it that either of us do like as individuals. We get together in the same room to do
What would you say are three tracks from Step Brothers 4 Life & After that could introduce people to Starlito and Don Trip?
Don Trip: For the whole sh*t, I would say that “Schadenfreude” is a record that would be a great introduction to who we are as artists and as people. If you’re not familiar with that record, I guess the synopsis would be that we’re in an era where people find more entertainment in your turmoil than in your brighter moments or successes.
And we certainly know we kind of speak on that, being in that space where we’re known enough for people to not really, at least in certain specific cases, give you the luxury of having a private life sometimes.And they become more invested in your drama than you are. So I would say ”Schadenfreude” for one of the records.
I would say “robinhood” for my second one. We come from less blessed spaces in life, and for me, that’s a record that kind of highlights the fact that I’m not at the bottom anymore. I’m not at the top, but I’m a long way from the bottom, and I think I’m on a productive path. I did it to help me and the people around me get as far from the bottom as possible. You know, that’s how that record speaks to me.
My third would be “Going in.” that’s a record, I think, for me, where I truly drew off of Star’s energy. And I think I kind of look at that record like a painting,it just came to life. He drew the outline and the picture, and I came in and painted it, if that makes sense. So I added color to it, almost.
When people make cartoons, one person draws it, another adds color, and someone else turns it into motion art. I think that’s the kind of collaboration that took place with that record. We truly built on each other, and I think anyone listening to it would get the same feeling. You can tell that we were truly locked in together to create that.
Don Trip: Yes, my math ain’t even close [laughs].
Starlito: There were some other brothers that,I quote,”We ain’t getting no younger,we might as well do it.” Never mind,that was Jagged Edge.

Starlito: But I think that our intention is the key [to] rocking out. This has been really fulfilling to re-energize our audience, and the reception we got from it is, if anything, pushing us in a direction of, ”Yeah, keep people going.” We didn’t set out to add 16 songs to a 16-song project. That speaks to our enthusiasm behind the brand.
With you working with each other for so long and being brothers for so long, what’s one thing about Don Trip that’s rubbed off on Starlito, and what’s one thing about Starlito that’s rubbed off on Don Trip?
Don Trip: I say branding, as far as Don Trip and Starlito. I think he’s always been pretty good at his branding, merch, and all his physical products. I think he’s exceptionally good at that, and that’s some stuff I’ve been learning and really been more involved in. That’s just some things I picked up from him as a person, especially as an artist.
As a person, I think I’ve picked up a lot of things from him. I guess one of the main things I’ve picked up from him is sincerity. I’m on the inside looking out, so I can’t say how I’ve always been, but I think the fact that he kind of wears his heart on his sleeve in a sense. The way his people are his people. you know,we ain’t the friendliest people. He’s pretty introverted. What’s the opposite of an introvert?
Starlito: Extrovert.
Don Trip: Yeah, he’s pretty much both. He’s got an unnatural blend of both. I’m more introverted,but either way,his sincerity,that’s something I think I appreciate enough to adopt a little.
