High Security,Peaceful Protests Mark Trump’s Scottish Sojourn
A substantial security operation was in full swing throughout the weekend as Donald Trump visited Scotland, with his golf courses at Turnberry and Menie serving as key locations. While a handful of individuals protested at Turnberry, larger demonstrations planned in Aberdeen and Edinburgh on Saturday proceeded largely without incident, a testament to the meticulous planning by authorities. The First Minister, while not yet able to provide a final figure for the policing costs, confirmed that his goverment is working closely with Police Scotland, the Scottish Police Authority, and the UK government to ascertain the total expenditure. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and security of major international visitors, stating, “The security arrangements have gone well since President Trump arrived on Friday, and that’s as it should be, because we’ve got an obligation to make sure that when we have major international visitors, when they come to Scotland, that they are protected and able to go about their activities.”
He also highlighted the importance of upholding democratic rights, adding, “It’s also significant that members of the public who wish to express their point of view, who want to protest about the visit or about othre issues, are able to go about their exercise of their democratic right to protest. That’s exactly what they’ve been able to do since Friday, and that’s the way it should be.”
Landmark Trade Deal Struck at Turnberry
The highlight of President Trump’s visit on Sunday was a meeting with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Turnberry, where they successfully negotiated and agreed upon a new transatlantic trade deal. This agreement, described by both leaders as a “huge deal” and a “partnership,” comes after what von der Leyen termed ”tough negotiations.”
The newly established trade deal will see US tariffs on goods from the European union set at a uniform 15% across the board. This represents a significant reduction from the previously threatened 30% levy on EU exports to the US, which was slated to take effect from August 1st.
President Trump is scheduled to depart Scotland and return to Washington on Tuesday. His itinerary includes a return to the UK for an official state visit in September, indicating ongoing diplomatic engagements between the US and the UK.
