A New Era for Pakistani Finance
The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is poised to launch Prism Plus on Tuesday,a next-generation payment and settlement system designed to modernize and fortify the nation’s financial infrastructure. This launch represents a significant step towards realizing SBP’s vision 2028, a extensive plan to build a more inclusive and robust financial ecosystem for Pakistan.
What is Prism Plus and Why does It Matter?
Prism Plus isn’t just an incremental upgrade; it’s a basic shift in how Pakistan handles financial transactions. The system is built upon the globally recognized ISO 20022 standard, which enables more structured, transparent, and automated dialogue between financial institutions. This translates to reduced errors, faster processing times, and increased security.
The new system comprises two core components: a faster Real-time gross Settlement (RTGS) system for high-value transactions and a brand-new Central Securities Depository (CSD) to efficiently manage government securities like Treasury bills (T-bills) and Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIBs). These improvements are designed to streamline the entire process, from initial transaction to final settlement.
Boosting Efficiency and Reducing Risk
According to the SBP, Prism Plus will deliver several key benefits. These include more efficient money transfers, improved liquidity management for securities transactions, and a significant reduction in systemic risks. The system’s features for transaction queuing and prioritization will allow for more controlled and predictable payment flows, while the ability to schedule future-dated payments adds a new layer of flexibility.
The launch event, scheduled for Tuesday, will be led by State Bank Governor Jameel Ahmed and will bring together key stakeholders from across the financial sector. This collaborative approach underscores the SBP’s commitment to working with industry partners to build a stronger financial future for Pakistan.
Part of a Broader Modernization effort
The introduction of Prism Plus is just one piece of a larger puzzle.Last month, Governor Ahmed announced plans to pilot a digital currency and finalize legislation to regulate virtual assets, signaling a proactive approach to embracing emerging financial technologies. This commitment to innovation is further evidenced by the recent growth in digital payment volumes.
In the third quarter of FY25, retail payment volumes increased by 12% year-on-year, reaching 2,408 million transactions, with a total value of Rs164 trillion. The SBP’s existing payment systems,Raast and RTGS,have been instrumental in driving this growth.Raast, in particular, has processed over 1.5 billion transactions valued at more than Rs34 trillion since its launch, while RTGS has facilitated 1.5 million large-value transactions totaling Rs347 trillion.
| Payment System | Transactions (Q3 FY25) | Value (Q3 FY25) | Cumulative Total (Since Launch) – Transactions | Cumulative Total (Since Launch) – Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raast | 371 million | Rs8.5 trillion | 1.5 billion+ | Rs34 trillion+ |
| RTGS | 1.5 million | Rs347 trillion | N/A | N/A |
