The tests revealed a significant frame rate dip-between 8% and 36%-when switching to Windows, making SteamOS the clear⁢ winner for gaming performance.Even wiht a translation layer, SteamOS, ⁣a linux-based operating system, showcases superior efficiency versus its rival. ASUS drivers improved Windows’s performance⁣ in some games, yet⁤ SteamOS consistently delivered higher frame rates; the SteamOS advantage is clear. Valve’s continuous Proton ⁢enhancements and Mesa driver improvements contribute to this lead. In tests with other games, the default Windows drivers⁤ from Lenovo lagged behind SteamOS. Such as, Returnal at high graphics settings and 1920×1200 resolution averaged 18 frames ‍per second on⁣ Windows but jumped to 33 FPS on SteamOS.

Updated drivers from Asus improved Windows performance, bringing Homeworld 3 close to SteamOS levels ⁤at low settings. However, even with these updates, Windows benchmark frame rates remained 8 to 36⁣ percent lower than SteamOS.

These results may seem surprising, given that SteamOS ⁣relies on Proton, a translation layer, to convert‍ Windows game code. Valve has consistently improved Proton’s efficiency and cross-compatibility. their ongoing work on Linux’s Mesa graphics drivers also appears to boost SteamOS graphics performance.

Additionally, SteamOS avoids much of the overhead‍ associated with Windows. Microsoft is addressing this with the upcoming “Xbox Experience for Handheld,” ⁣designed to minimize⁤ background activity and prioritize gaming⁢ performance for higher frame rates.
