Steel Investment Fund Cancelled
Government Abandons cash Grant Plan for Innovative Steel Projects
Table of Contents
Government plans to provide cash grants for innovative new steel projects
have been scrapped. While ministers maintain their commitment to a £2.5bn
investment in the steel industry (as pledged in their manifesto), funding
will now be channeled through alternative means.
The decision to prioritize supporting existing, loss-making steelworks led
to the cancellation of a competition that would have awarded grants for
new ideas. The government aims to foster a “competitive business
environment” by focusing on making current steelworks profitable.
Context: UK Steel Industry Challenges
-
Financial Difficulties: The UK steel industry has been
struggling with high energy prices, increased tariffs, and a global steel
glut.
-
National Security: Maintaining domestic primary steel
production is considered a matter of national security by Downing Street. -
Existing Support: Currently, four of the UK’s six main
steel companies receive some form of state financial support.
Funding Shift: From Grants to National Wealth Fund
The original plan, expected to be detailed in the upcoming steel strategy
next month, involved a competitive grant process. However, unforeseen
expenditures – specifically, the government takeover of British Steel in
Scunthorpe and wage payments for Speciality Steels UK (SSUK) – have
necessitated a change in approach.
Businesses can still access funding through the government’s
National Wealth Fund, but bids will require private
financing and compete with other sectors for funding.

The frist projects funded through the National Wealth Fund are expected to
be announced as early as next month. Steel Minister Chris McDonald has
stated that the government will continue to provide “a huge amount of
support” to the steel industry.
