Steelers Seek Offensive Balance⁣ with Aaron Rodgers

Updated June‍ 11, 2025

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur ⁤Smith is tasked with merging the team’s established run-heavy approach with quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ pass-oriented style.Last season, the Steelers ranked fourth in rushing attempts, while Rodgers’ previous ⁢team, the Jets, favored passing.

Smith ⁤addressed the challenge, stating his aim ⁤for a more balanced attack. he emphasized tailoring the‍ offense to exploit opponent weaknesses. “You’d love ⁤to be ⁢more‍ balanced,” Smith said. “You’re not obvious in how you want⁢ to attack this defense… we didn’t bring aaron in here – ⁣and signed‌ DK ⁣ [Metcalf] for all that money — to ⁣go run‍ the‍ wishbone. So, you know,‌ you try to⁤ play to the ⁤strengths of your‍ team.”

Despite a high ⁣volume of carries, the Steelers averaged just‍ 4.1 ‍yards per rush last year, placing them near the bottom of the league. In contrast, the Jets ⁢averaged 4.3 yards⁣ per carry but ran‍ considerably fewer times. ‌Rodgers’ tenure with‍ the Green Bay Packers⁢ also leaned heavily toward passing, ⁤with ‌the Packers recording the fourth-fewest rushing plays ⁤from 2008 to ⁤2022.

Smith expressed confidence ‍in adapting his scheme to the current roster. “Our⁤ job, especially as a coach,is⁣ to play to the strengths of your players,” Smith said. “We have our foundation things that don’t change, but whether you lean into certain schemes, ‍year after year, you adapt again to the ⁢personnel you’ve got.”

A key ⁣aspect of ‍Smith’s role involves determining the ⁢extent of Rodgers’ freedom to adjust plays at the line of scrimmage. Smith ⁣downplayed past controversies regarding quarterback ⁣autonomy within his ⁣system. He added, “…Every ⁢quarterback is different. every ‌offensive ‍scheme is different… our issue‍ at the end of the year was we weren’t good enough.”

I’m going to learn the offense,⁤ and‍ Arthur and I are going to‌ talk a bunch ⁣this summer. ‍If ther’s things that I ‍like that I’d ⁤like⁤ to see ⁣in the ‍offense, Arthur, I’m‌ sure, is going to put it in. ‌He knows⁢ how to call a game.I know how‍ to get us in the right ⁢spot ‌based on what’s ⁤called. There’s two ‍or three plays called in the huddle sometimes. My job is to get us in the right⁣ play.

The upcoming training camp will‌ be crucial for Smith and ‍Rodgers to ⁢refine their collaboration and ‌establish a cohesive ‍offensive strategy, balancing the run‌ game‌ and Rodgers’ passing skills for the Steelers.
