Stephen A. Smith Considers Presidential Run, Eyes 2028 Debate Stage

Stephen A. Smith, the prominent ESPN and SiriusXM commentator, is seriously contemplating a run for the presidency in 2028. The well-known sports personality revealed he is “giving strong consideration” to launching a Democratic bid and potentially appearing on the debate stage in 2027.

Smith disclosed his thoughts during a recent one-on-one interview with Robert Costa, a national correspondent for “CBS Sunday Morning” and the chief Washington analyst for CBS News. He indicated that 2026 will be a year dedicated to careful consideration, study, and understanding the issues facing voters.

While acknowledging he has “no desire to run for office,” Smith expressed a strong interest in engaging in debate – a skill he has honed over years on ESPN’s “First Take.” “I think that the American people deserve to listen to and hear from somebody who genuinely cares about making life better for them instead of yourself,” Smith said in the interview, set to air this weekend.

The possibility of a Smith presidential campaign has even garnered attention from former President Donald Trump, who publicly voiced his support last year. Trump, speaking during a NewsNation town hall, stated he “loves watching” Smith and believes he possesses “great entertainment skills, which is very important.” He added, “People watch him. You know, a lot of these Democrats I watch, I say they have no chance. I’ve been pretty good at picking people and picking candidates. And I will tell you, I’d love to see him run.”

Smith’s journey into potential political candidacy began with a weekly political show where he interviews government leaders, expanding his reach beyond the sports world and into Washington D.C. He is known for his combative and colorful commentary, and his willingness to confront challenging topics.

Costa, who conducted the interview with Smith, reportedly believes Smith is “moving closer” to a presidential run, drawing parallels to his previous interactions with Donald Trump before his first campaign.

The ESPN personality’s potential entry into the political arena represents a significant shift for the outspoken commentator. While the decision remains under consideration, Smith’s willingness to explore a presidential bid underscores his ambition and desire to engage in national discourse.

It remains to be seen whether Smith will ultimately decide to pursue the presidency, but his contemplation of a run has already sparked considerable discussion, and speculation. He has a year to weigh the possibilities and prepare for a potential campaign.
