Stephen Graham: Breaking Barriers in Acting and Creating Matriarch Productions

Stephen Graham: A Journey Through Acting

Stephen Graham, aged 51, is a well-respected actor known for his strong character performances. He established Matriarch Productions in 2020 with his wife, Hannah Walters. Their first project was the 2021 film Boiling Point, a groundbreaking single-take film. Graham played head chef Andy Jones and received a Bafta nomination for his role. He wanted to create a positive and inclusive environment on set, rejecting traditional hierarchies where actors are ranked by importance.

Graham’s career spans nearly 30 years. He has worked with major stars like Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Al Pacino, and Robert De Niro. He has also collaborated with notable directors such as Shane Meadows and Martin Scorsese. Viewers may recognize him from roles in Line of Duty, Matilda the Musical, Boardwalk Empire, and This is England.

Currently, Graham appears in Blitz, directed by Steve McQueen. The film tells the story of a mixed-race boy in 1940 London who, amidst World War II, encounters grave-robbers played by Graham and Kathy Burke. Despite often being cast as villains, Graham finds these roles intriguing and worthwhile.

Graham prepares for each role with great diligence. He starts by choosing the right shoes for his characters, then develops their walks, which sometimes takes weeks to perfect. For his brief role in Blitz, Graham created an intricate backstory, enhancing his character’s depth.

His journey into acting began in Liverpool. As a child, he took part in school plays, which led to joining the youth program at the Everyman Theatre. His stepfather, a strong influence in his life, nurtured his interest in acting, introducing him to classic films and actors.

Graham’s breakthrough came in his late twenties with a role in Gangs of New York, where he impressed Scorsese with his ideas for the character. This marked the beginning of significant collaborations, including with DiCaprio in Gangs of New York and later projects.

Throughout his career, Graham has achieved impressive milestones. He has experienced moments with legends like Scorsese and De Niro that he describes as surreal. Currently, he juggles family life and professional commitments while remaining humble and grounded.

Graham is also involved in new projects like A Thousand Blows, a 12-part drama set to stream on Disney+. He has dedicated considerable effort to preparing for his role, undergoing extensive training to get in shape.

His career continues to grow, with upcoming roles in the Peaky Blinders film. Recently, he received an unexpected call from director Scott Cooper about a role in a biopic of Bruce Springsteen, further expanding his impressive filmography.

Blitz is available now in cinemas and will stream on Apple TV+ starting November 22.
