Hawking posited that the world could reach a critical point by 2600. He argued that humanity has less than six centuries to secure its long-term survival through the colonization of space. He projected a future where Earth’s climate could become similar to that of Venus, with surface temperatures reaching approximately 250 degrees Celsius and perpetual rainfall of sulfuric acid.

Hawking acknowledged the inherent difficulty in implementing effective measures against climate change, attributing it to human ambition. He stressed that Earth has a limited carrying capacity, and the exponential growth of the human population clashes with the finite resources of the natural environment. He calculated that the total extinction of life on Earth is a statistical certainty within a timeframe of one to ten thousand years unless radical changes are made to societal organization.

His proposed solution centered on transforming humanity into a multi-planetary species capable of inhabiting other solar systems. He advocated for prioritizing technological development towards achieving faster-than-light travel, drawing inspiration from the interstellar voyages depicted in the television series Star Trek. The Breakthrough Starshot plan involves launching a “nanocraft” propelled by light beams. This spacecraft could reach Mars in under an hour, Pluto in a matter of days, and surpass the distance traveled by the Voyager probes in a single week. The journey to the Alpha Centauri system is estimated to take approximately twenty years. Hawking called for an investment of $100 million to fund these advancements.

Hawking’s warnings, while stark, were rooted in a deep understanding of physics and a concern for the long-term survival of humanity. His own life, marked by a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at the age of 21, fueled his dedication to exploring the universe and seeking solutions to existential threats.
