Investigative Journalist Stephen Janis Champions Accountability Through Reporting
Stephen Janis, an award-winning investigative journalist and documentary filmmaker, has dedicated his career to uncovering systemic issues and holding power accountable. His work, spanning investigations into policing, corruption, and the roots of violence, has resonated both in print and on screen, sparking crucial conversations and inspiring reform.
Currently a Capitol Hill Correspondent and senior reporter at The Real News Network, Janis continues to build on a foundation established during his time as the Senior Investigative Reporter for the now-defunct Baltimore Examiner. There, he received two Maryland DC Delaware Press Association Awards for his reporting on unsolved murders in Baltimore and the killings of prostitutes. This commitment to shedding light on difficult truths has remained a constant throughout his career.
Janis’s impact extends beyond traditional journalism. His first feature documentary, “The Friendliest Town,” distributed by Gravitas Ventures, garnered an Award of Distinction from The Impact Doc Film Festival and a Humanitarian Award from The Indie Film Fest. He also co-created and co-hosts “The Police Accountability Report,” a YouTube series that has reached over fifty million viewers and fueled national discussions on policing and transparency.
His investigations have also appeared on prominent television programs including Netflix’s “Unsolved Mysteries,” Investigation Discovery’s “Dead of Night,” NBC’s “Relentless,” and TV One’s “Sins of the City.” This broad reach demonstrates Janis’s ability to translate complex investigations into compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
Janis is also the co-author of several books, including “Why Do We Kill: The Pathology of Murder in Baltimore” and “You Can’t Stop Murder: Truths About Policing in Baltimore and Beyond.” He further explores cold cases and the pursuit of justice as the co-host of the true crime podcast “Land of the Unsolved.”
Prior to joining The Real News Network, Janis honed his investigative skills as an investigative producer for WBFF Fox 45, earning three Capital Emmys for his reporting. He is known for his innovative approach to journalism, embracing technology – including data analysis and digital production – to connect with younger audiences while upholding the integrity and depth of his work.
Janis’s reporting is characterized by clarity, empathy, and a fundamental belief that journalism should not only expose the truth but also empower individuals to take action. His dedication to these principles has solidified his position as a leading voice in accountability journalism, shaping the landscape of investigative reporting in Baltimore and beyond. He continues to uncover the systems behind inequality, corruption, and power, turning complex investigations into stories that inspire reform and public engagement.
