Stephen King Praises Apple TV Crime Thriller Last Seen

Known for sharing eclectic streaming recommendations with his followers, King took to social media to highlight the series, singling out both its quality and its bleak trajectory. As King wrote on X, Two observations about LAST SEEN, 4 episodes in (Apple+): 1 — It’s a fantastic show, and 2 — I see no good resolution for the families involved. Or for Sarah, who is played beautifully by Chloe Jean Lourdes. The six-episode miniseries is directed by Christian Schwochow and created by Australian writer Kris Mrksa. It is based on the 2011 novel The Dispatcher by Ryan David Jahn, an author who has previously cited Stephen King as one of his “five big influences.”

The narrative follows Ian Ridley, a former police detective who now works as an emergency dispatcher in Australia. Played by Patrick Brammall, Ridley is still shattered by the disappearance of his young daughter, Maggie, 11 years earlier. Separated from his wife and six months sober, Ridley has never accepted that Maggie is gone for good. His fragile stability cracks when a storm unearths the remains of a young girl, followed by a tense phone call at the end of Episode 2 that sets him on a desperate path. That path leads Ridley to a reclusive couple, Henry and Jenna, portrayed by Brendan Cowell and Maxine Peake, alongside their teenage daughter Sarah, played by Chloe Jean Lourdes. The cast also features Daniel Henshall, Zahra Newman, Felix Cameron, and Bert La Bonte.

Critical Reception and Diverging Views

While King is enthusiastic about the show, Last Seen has drawn a largely positive response from professional critics, holding an 87% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 23 reviews. Reviewers have praised its character-driven pacing and strong central performances. Luke Buckmaster of The Guardian called it one of the standout shows of the year, noting that he was totally hooked by the third episode. RogerEbert.com critic Brian Tallerico awarded the series three stars, praising the depth of the supporting cast and writing that Sarah avoids becoming a mere cog in the twist machine. Not all critics were entirely won over, however. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter took issue with Ian Ridley’s erratic behavior, arguing that it quickly becomes inappropriate and unsustainable. Even so, Fienberg acknowledged that the project holds together thanks to the strength of Patrick Brammall and the ensemble cast. With the final episodes rolling out on Apple TV, viewers have until the October 9 finale to catch up with the thriller.
