Stephen Mulhern, host of the popular ITV game show Catchphrase, recently experienced a blunder he says he’s “never done before.” The incident occurred during a celebrity edition of the show.
The program, known for its “say what you see” format, originally premiered in 1986 with Roy Walker as host. After Walker’s departure in 1999, Nick Weir and Mark Curry took turns hosting until the show’s hiatus.
Mulhern took over as host of the revived Catchphrase in 2013, maintaining the core format while introducing minor changes such as a 3D version of Mr. Chip and increasing the number of contestants to three.
On Saturday, June 7, Mulhern was joined by jeremy Vine, Charlie Hedges, and comedian Luke Kempner for the celebrity edition. The Catchphrase moment happened during a video clip depicting pastries with escalating price tags.
While narrating the clip, Mulhern inadvertently said, “Literally, the prices have gone through the roof!”
The contestants quickly realized that Mulhern might have revealed the answer.
“Sorry, what? Was that the answer?” Vine asked after buzzing in, prompting laughter from everyone.
Mulhern, covering his mouth in disbelief, exclaimed, “I have never in my life done that. In 10 years!”
Kempner joked about Mulhern’s unintentional assistance, saying, “I was just thinking ‘this is a very tricky one, if it’s not that!'”
Vine added to the humor, remarking, “We’ve got a bit of Catchphrase history here. roy Walker never did that.”
The popular family show, Catchphrase, has been renewed for an 11th season. ITV commissioner Gemma John-Lewis said the show’s popularity and Mulhern’s “infectious and playful humour” make it a viewer favorite.
