Stepping into the Shadows: My Journey into the Mysterious World of Yaga
Breaking the Taboo: Conversations About Race in Burundi
The times of crisis that Burundi has gone through have left wounds on the people. This is part of the reason why the conversation about race is still considered taboo by many. However, a recent experience at Yaga has shown that it’s possible to have open and honest discussions about race in a way that promotes unity and understanding.
My Experience at Yaga
It was a typical morning in the city of Bujumbura when I arrived at Yaga for my internship. As I walked in, I was greeted with warmth and hospitality. The atmosphere was relaxed, with tea and coffee being served. I was introduced to my colleagues, and we began our training session.
Throughout the day, I attended various meetings, including a career planning session. It was during one of these meetings that I heard someone express a racist comment. Initially, I was taken aback, but as I looked around, I saw that my colleagues were not reacting with shock or outrage. Instead, they seemed to find it normal.
A New Perspective on Race
As I reflected on the conversation, I realized that my colleagues were not trying to be hurtful or divisive. Instead, they were using humor to address the issue of race in a way that was harmless and non-confrontational. It was a refreshing change from the usual taboo surrounding the topic.
What struck me most was how my colleagues were able to discuss their differences in a way that was respectful and constructive. They were able to laugh and joke about their differences without resorting to hatred or anger.
Learning from the Past
The conversation about race at Yaga reminded me of a similar experience I had while studying at university. A group of students had gotten into a fight, and it had escalated into a racial incident. However, in the aftermath, we were able to come together and discuss the issue in a way that promoted healing and understanding.
These experiences have taught me that race does not have to be a source of hatred and division. Instead, it can be an opportunity for us to learn from each other and grow together.
A New Approach to Discussing Race
In today’s age, we should not fear discussing race. Instead, we should approach it as an opportunity to learn from each other and promote understanding. By doing so, we can work towards a more united and harmonious society.
At Yaga, I saw firsthand how open and honest discussions about race can promote unity and understanding. It’s a lesson that I will carry with me, and one that I hope others will learn from as well.
