Steve Cropper, the highly respected guitarist renowned for his pivotal role in Booker T. & the M.G.’s and his extensive work at Stax Records, passed away today at the age of 84, as confirmed by his son to Variety.
Early Life and the Rise of the Mar-Keys
Born October 21, 1941, in Dora, Missouri, Cropper relocated to Memphis at age nine and began playing guitar at fourteen. He co-founded the band the Royal Spades in 1961 with high school classmates, later rebranding as the Mar-Keys. The Mar-Keys achieved regional success with the instrumental hit “Last Night.”
Founding Member of Booker T. & the M.G.’s and Stax Records Legacy
Cropper’s career took a defining turn when he joined Stax Records, initially working at the record store and studio. He became a founding member of the celebrated Stax house band, Booker T. & the M.G.’s,alongside Booker T. Jones (organ), Al Jackson jr. (drums),and Lewie steinberg (bass),who was later replaced by Donald “Duck” Dunn.
As a core member of the M.G.’s, Cropper’s distinctive guitar work became integral to some of the most iconic soul and R&B recordings of the 1960s. He contributed significantly to hits such as Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” and Wilson Pickett’s “In The Midnight Hour.”
Beyond Stax: Production, Engineering, and Collaboration
cropper’s talents extended beyond performance. At Stax,he also served as a producer and engineer,collaborating with a diverse range of artists including John Lennon,Rod Stewart,and John Prine. He left Stax Records in 1970 to pursue other musical endeavors.
