Steve Soboroff Appointed to Lead Los Angeles Wildfire Recovery Efforts
Los Angeles Taps Steve Soboroff to Lead Recovery After Devastating Wildfires
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced Friday the appointment of Steve Soboroff, a seasoned civic leader and businessman, to spearhead the city’s recovery efforts following the catastrophic wildfires that ravaged Pacific Palisades and surrounding neighborhoods. Soboroff, a longtime figure in Los Angeles’ civic and development circles, will serve as the city’s chief recovery officer, tasked with crafting a comprehensive strategy to rebuild homes, businesses, schools, and community spaces.
“Steve Soboroff’s name is attached to hope,” Bass said during the announcement. “It is attached to energy and to many, many accomplishments. He will recommend a comprehensive city strategy for rebuilding and for expediting—expediting is a very important word here—the return of residents, businesses, schools, nonprofits, and parks.”
Soboroff, a former president of the Los Angeles Police Commission, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He played a pivotal role in the development of the Crypto.com Arena (formerly Staples Center) and the Playa Vista community, as well as orchestrating the complex transport of the space shuttle Endeavour through Los Angeles streets to its final home at the California Science Center.
“No one is better equipped to create a rebuilding plan than Steve Soboroff,” Bass emphasized.
The wildfires, which decimated a 120-year-old community, left thousands displaced and countless others grappling with the loss of homes, jobs, and cherished belongings. Soboroff, who lived in the area for 40 years and raised his family there, acknowledged the profound emotional and logistical challenges facing residents.
“People in L.A. are hurting,” Soboroff said. “They are frustrated, like the mayor said. They’re confused. They want to know what they can do today. They can’t get back to their homes to find the pictures of their loved ones. And a whole lot of people are out of work, as a community has been wiped off the face of the Earth.”
He urged Angelenos to focus on hope and incremental progress. “What we need is and what I hope people will start out with today is hope,” he said. “There is an A-to-Z for each one of us. And ‘A’ is today, and we’re going to get there step by step. The city is going to help to the extent it can, and we will have to outsource to the extent it can’t.”
Soboroff also addressed critics of the city’s response to the disaster, calling for unity in the face of adversity. “If people want to get on the bus with us, get on it,” he said. “If they want to spend their time throwing embers right now and next Tuesday when it’s windy by spending time on that kind of stuff, just don’t get on our bus.”
Mayor Bass pledged to sign a series of executive orders next week aimed at accelerating recovery efforts. “We are going to do everything we can to clear the way so people can get back home,” she said.
In addition to the rebuilding efforts, the city will launch a full after-action investigation into its handling of the wildfire disaster. The review will examine issues ranging from the fire department’s preparedness to the availability of water and adequate water pressure in the affected areas. Bass confirmed that the investigation will include both internal and external evaluations.
As Los Angeles begins the long road to recovery, Soboroff’s appointment signals a renewed focus on collaboration, urgency, and hope for a community determined to rise from the ashes.
