Kevin Lu, an adjunct professor at the Stevens⁢ Institute of Technology, has been ‍honored with the 2024 IEEE Standards Board Distinguished Service Award.The award recognizes Lu’s extensive contributions to the progress of telecommunications standards.

Lu’s career spans both industry adn academia. he earned master’s and doctoral degrees in systems science and mathematics from Washington⁢ University in St. Louis in 1981⁢ and 1984, respectively. In‍ 1990, he authored the influential paper “System and Cost ⁣Analyses of Broad-Band Fiber Loop Architectures,” advocating for passive optical networks, now vital for global⁢ fiber deployment.

Lu began his career at Bell Communications Research (Bellcore), later Telcordia, where he contributed to projects that shaped the modern⁣ communications landscape. After Ericsson acquired Telcordia in 2012, Lu joined Broadcom, working on cellphone chips and contributing to mobile standards for the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP).

In 2015, Lu transitioned⁣ to ⁣academia, joining the Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, ⁤N.J. He was honored with the Morton Distinguished Teaching Professor ⁣Award in May 2019.

Throughout his career, Lu has ‍been actively involved with the IEEE Standards Association, serving as the director of standards development for the IEEE Communications Society in 2012 and‍ 2013. He currently chairs the IEEE Standards Board’s Industry ⁢Connections committee.

Even after decades of professional achievement, he remains focused on lifelong learning, mentoring, and building bridges between generations⁤ of engineers.

Lu sees his academic role as a continuation of his life’s work, providing students with insights gained from his extensive industry experience.

lu encourages his students to embrace lifelong learning and develop soft skills alongside technical knowledge. He works “to help students discover who they are and where they ‍might thrive.”

Despite announcing his intention to⁢ retire, Lu has been persuaded to remain at Stevens Institute of Technology in a new role.

“When students tell me they’ve discovered their path … that’s the most rewarding thing.”
