Shreveport, La., police are investigating after an embalmed infant was discovered in a load of linens shipped from a Dallas funeral home to a Shreveport dry cleaner.Employees at Alsco Uniforms on Hollywood Avenue reported the disturbing find Tuesday night, prompting a police examination.
Cpl. Chris Bordelon described the scene as “very disturbing.” The infant, wrapped in laundry, appeared to be mummified. Detectives traced the linens to Golden Gate Funeral Home in Dallas. According to police, the infant died May 3 and was scheduled for cremation after a May 17 funeral service. Instead, the body ended up in a laundry shipment bound for Shreveport.
“It was a very bizarre set of circumstances,” Bordelon said. The Violent Crimes Team launched an investigation, successfully tracking the origin of the linens. Detectives suspect the infant had been embalmed, citing a strong formaldehyde odor and early signs of decomposition.
the infant was found wearing clothing embroidered with the initials “K.M.,” the only confirmed identification. While foul play is not suspected, investigators believe the incident points to negligence. “This clearly is some type of act of negligence, whether it be on the part of a cleaning service for the funeral home or the funeral home itself,” Bordelon stated.
The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office has taken custody of the remains and is working to return the child to the family in Dallas. The Texas Funeral Service Commission has been notified, and the investigation continues across state lines. Authorities emphasized that laws govern the handling of bodies, and the funeral home or involved individuals could face legal consequences.
Golden Gate Funeral Home declined to comment.
“This is an unfortunate set of circumstances that no family should have to go through,” Bordelon said.
