Despite two crashes during practice at the Assen circuit, Marc Marquez avoided serious injury. The Ducati rider required stitches to his chin after a fall, but he or else escaped with bruises.
Marquez’s first crash occurred during the morning session at nearly 125 mph. He hit the track with such force that circulation was briefly cut off in his hand. In the afternoon, he crashed again, sliding across the track and gravel, hitting his chest and chin.
Dr. Angel Charte, MotoGP’s medical director, said Marquez suffered bruises to his face, a finger, stomach, and left elbow. Marquez was cleared to participate in the next practice session.
“The best part is that everything was just bruises,” Marquez said. He added that his hand went numb after the first crash due to the impact on the ulnar nerve near his left elbow.
Marquez also suggested changes to the track’s gravel, saying it should be replaced with stones for next year.
Despite the pain, Marquez joked, ”They gave me stitches in my chin, but they don’t count towards the championship.” He attributed the crashes to a lack of temperature in the rear tire and needing to push for a fast lap on a compromised tire compound.
What’s next
Marquez is expected to continue racing after being cleared by medical staff.
