More than 30,000 citizenships were granted by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen’s government without checking if applicants were Islamists, according to claims raised by Danish People’s Party leader Morten Messerschmidt on August 31, 2026. But a confidential parliamentary response reviewed by Ekstra Bladet revealed that Kahn actually obtained his residence permit in July 2016, when Støjberg served as immigration minister under a Venstre-led administration supported by the Danish People’s Party.
Støjberg and Messerschmidt Target Social Democrats Over Immigration
For months, Inger Støjberg and Morten Messerschmidt used Mohamed Abdi Kahn to criticize the ruling Social Democrats. On September 7, Støjberg posted on Facebook that the governing party would not do anything concrete to deport Kahn from Denmark. Messerschmidt similarly argued on August 31 that the administration handed out thousands of passports without adequate background checks. Neither politician mentioned in their initial posts that Kahn arrived in 2015 and received his residence permit during Støjberg’s own ministerial tenure.

Social Democrats Push Back Against Omissions
Socialdemokratiet lawmakers quickly pointed out the omission regarding the timeline of Kahn’s arrival. Social Democratic immigration spokesperson Thomas Skriver Jensen called the situation embarrassing and trivial in public statements. Retsordfører Lea Wermelin also highlighted on social media that Støjberg herself approved the residency while backed by the Danish People’s Party. When Ekstra Bladet asked Støjberg if she accepted responsibility for the 2016 permit, she did not answer directly. Instead, she maintained that she inherited a lenient system and instituted 114 tightening measures during her time in office.
Mohamed Abdi Kahn Demands Millions to Leave Denmark
Mohamed Abdi Kahn has lived in Denmark since arriving from Ethiopia in 2015, later securing family reunification for his wife and six children. He drew public scrutiny after accepting state funds for a voluntary return trip that he ultimately did not take. He now commands a social media following exceeding 19,000 users, where he routinely criticizes Danish society and advocates for early Islamic upbringing. Following the revelation that Støjberg approved his initial residency, Kahn posted online that Støjberg must now resolve her own creation, stating I was granted residency when Inger Støjberg was Minister of Immigration and Integration. And now she has to solve her own problem. I am her problem.
Kahn recently demanded 3.5 million kroner to leave the country permanently, despite having previously accepted financial assistance for a repatriation he failed to complete.
