New Pilot Study Explores Repurposing Propranolol for Gastrointestinal Distress
A groundbreaking pilot study is shedding new light on a potential treatment for the frequently enough-debilitating stomach issues experienced by many individuals on the autism spectrum. Researchers at the University of Missouri have found that propranolol, a common medication primarily used too manage high blood pressure and certain heart conditions, may offer relief for gastrointestinal problems in some autistic teens and young adults.
Understanding the Gut-Brain Connection in Autism
It’s well-documented that individuals with autism are disproportionately affected by digestive challenges. Conditions like bloating, constipation, and diarrhea are substantially more prevalent in this population compared to the general public.Previous research has established a strong link between these gastrointestinal issues and underlying factors such as stress, anxiety, and depression. This connection highlights the intricate relationship between the gut and the brain, often referred to as the gut-brain axis, and underscores the need for innovative approaches to improve the quality of life for autistic individuals by addressing the root causes of their discomfort.
Propranolol: A Dual-action Hope?
This latest research builds upon earlier work by Brad Ferguson, an assistant research professor at the University of Missouri School of Medicine. In 2023, Ferguson co-authored a study that demonstrated propranolol’s efficacy in reducing anxiety among people with autism. building on this success, his new study aimed to investigate whether the same medication could also help alleviate gastrointestinal distress.
The pilot study involved 46 participants who receive care at Mizzou’s Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment. The findings revealed an intriguing pattern: autistic teens and young adults who exhibited higher heart rate variability-a physiological indicator of a more relaxed nervous system-experienced greater advancement in their gastrointestinal symptoms after a 12-week course of propranolol. Conversely, those with a more stressed nervous system showed less pronounced benefits.
“Our ultimate goal is to support precision medicine by finding out who can benefit from certain treatment options the most,” Ferguson stated. “We found that propranolol seemed to work best for those whose nervous system was more relaxed.”
The Path Forward: Precision Medicine and Smart Technology
This research represents a meaningful step towards personalized treatment strategies for autism. By identifying specific physiological markers, such as heart rate variability, clinicians might potentially be able to predict which individuals are most likely to respond positively to propranolol for their digestive issues.
Looking ahead, Ferguson is collaborating with Fang Wang from the college of Engineering. Their joint effort will involve utilizing a smartwatch app designed to monitor stress levels and social activity in individuals with autism, both those experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms and those who are not. This innovative approach promises to provide deeper insights into the complex interplay of stress, behavior, and gut health, further refining the request of precision medicine in autism care.
The findings of this promising pilot study were published in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology.
