Researchers at Uppsala University undertook a detailed genetic analysis of four burials, challenging the long-held assumption that those buried together were always close relatives like parents and children or siblings. The findings, published on , in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B, demonstrate a more nuanced understanding of kinship within these communities.
One particularly striking discovery involved a grave containing an adult female and the remains of two young children – a boy and a girl aged approximately four and one-and-a-half years old, respectively. Genetic testing confirmed that the children were full siblings, but the woman was not their mother. Instead, she was identified as their aunt or half-sister, suggesting a deliberate inclusion of extended family members in burial rituals.
“Surprisingly enough, the analysis showed that many of those who were buried together were second- or third-degree relatives, rather than first-degree relatives — in other words, parent and child or siblings — as is often assumed,” explained study co-author Helena Malmström, an archaeogeneticist at Uppsala University. “This suggests that these people had a good knowledge of their family lineages and that relationships beyond the immediate family played an important role.”
Further analysis revealed additional examples of extended family connections. A grave containing a boy and a girl was found to hold the remains of third-degree relatives, likely cousins. Another burial contained a girl and a young woman who were also identified as third-degree relatives, potentially a great-aunt and great-niece.
Perhaps the most poignant discovery involved a teenage girl buried with a collection of bones belonging to a young adult male. DNA analysis confirmed that the bones were those of her father. The arrangement suggests that his remains had been previously interred elsewhere and were later moved to be placed with his daughter, indicating a continued reverence for familial bonds even after death.
“As We see unusual for these kinds of hunter-gatherer graves to be preserved, studies of kinship in archaeological hunter-gatherer cultures are scarce and typically limited in scale,” noted Tiina Mattila, a population geneticist at Uppsala University who led the genetic analysis. The preservation of the Ajvide site makes it an exceptionally valuable resource for understanding the social complexities of these early communities.
The Ajvide cemetery was occupied for at least four centuries, and archaeological excavations have uncovered significant quantities of pottery and animal bones alongside the burials. The presence of multiple individuals within some graves initially led researchers to assume close familial ties, but advances in ancient DNA analysis have allowed for a more precise understanding of these relationships.
This study represents the first comprehensive exploration of family relationships among Scandinavian Neolithic hunter-gatherers.
