Confronting Difficult Histories and Global censorship
Igusti’s artistic mission is deeply rooted in a desire to document and commemorate their community’s journey, particularly experiences often marginalized or silenced. They strive to avoid artistic categorization, embracing a wide range of subjects and forms. A central theme in their work is the exploration of difficult histories, such as the 1998 riots in Indonesia, and the often-overlooked role of Western governments in these events.Igusti powerfully articulates the importance of art as a tool to circumvent censorship. They envision creating works – like plays and poems – that directly address sensitive topics, acknowledging that these pieces may face suppression within their country of origin. However, they also emphasize the resilience of art, its ability to find new audiences and platforms beyond geographical and political boundaries.
This perspective is informed by the work of organizations like National Queer Theater, whose Criminal Queerness Pride 2025 Festival showcases stories of individuals censored, detained, or murdered by their governments. Igusti sees this as a powerful example of how art can transcend oppression, allowing marginalized voices to be heard globally. “To be able to just do that as a writer and artist, in itself, is a great honor and responsibility,” they state.
