Hurricane Erin Intensifies, threatening U.S. Gulf Coast
Hurricane Erin is rapidly intensifying over the Gulf of Mexico, boasting sustained winds of nearly 160 mph as of this weekend. While its intensity has fluctuated, forecasters predict Erin will remain a powerful storm as it approaches the U.S., increasing the potential for notable flooding and other impacts.
Climate change is contributing to the increasing power of hurricanes. Warmer and moister air provides more fuel for extreme weather events, including hurricanes and intense inland storms. Experts note that warm ocean temperatures also allow storms to carry more water, elevating the risk of flooding – the leading cause of hurricane-related deaths.
Erin is the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2025 season, following a relatively quiet start with several tropical storms. The National Hurricane Center indicates the season may be gaining momentum, currently monitoring a tropical wave in the eastern Atlantic with the potential to develop into another storm within the next week.
