Cambridge University has awarded rapper Stormzy an honorary degree in recognition
of his efforts to promote higher education among black students. The 31-year-old,
whose real name is michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., received a Doctorate
in Law for his Stormzy Scholarship program.
The scholarship,launched in 2018,provides financial assistance to black UK
students pursuing studies at the university. To date, 56 undergraduates have
received full tuition and maintenance support through the program, which is backed
by his £Merky foundation and HSBC UK.
Prof. Deborah Prentice, the university’s vice-chancellor, lauded Stormzy’s
“transformative” scholarship program and expressed pride in recognizing his work
with the honorary degree.
“It’s so critically important for black students, especially, to be aware that it can 100%
be an option to attend a university of this calibre,” Stormzy saeid when he
launched the scheme.
Other notable figures receiving honorary degrees alongside Stormzy included Lady
Arden of Heswall, a former UK Supreme Court justice, and Olympic gold medalist
Dame Katherine Grainger, both of whom received Doctorates in Law. Acclaimed actor
Sir Simon Russell Beale received a Doctorate in letters, as did U.S.political
activist and author Professor Angela Davis.
Prentice noted that each of the honorary graduates had made an extraordinary
contribution to their respective fields and continue to inspire people worldwide.

The university plans to continue its efforts to promote diversity and inclusion
on campus, building on the foundation laid by Stormzy’s scholarship program and
