Stormzy to Executive Produce Official Ian Wright Biopic

Stormzy’s #Merky Films is co-producing an official biopic centered on the life and career of Arsenal and England soccer legend Ian Wright. The musician and business mogul will also serve as an executive producer on the project.

Confirmed on May 12, 2026, the film will chronicle Wright’s journey from his early hardships to his rise as one of the most prominent figures in British soccer. The narrative will explore his experiences as a Black British boy born to first-generation Caribbean immigrants within a working-class community in South London.

According to the official synopsis, the story begins on the Honor Oak Estate in Brockley, south London, where soccer served as Wright’s primary escape from a difficult home life. The plot highlights the role of schoolteacher Sydney Pigden, who recognized Wright’s struggles and encouraged him to believe in his potential.

The film will detail the volatility of Wright’s teenage years, during which his professional aspirations were threatened by oppression, rejection, and internal rage. By his early 20s, the narrative depicts a period of fading hope as Wright strove to become the parent he never had, eventually facing a pivotal choice between his existing security and a final attempt to enter professional soccer.

Wright’s professional trajectory saw him overcome years of rejection from various clubs to become a central figure in the sport. He earned 33 caps for the England national team, competing alongside players such as Zidane and Beckham, and overcame significant injury setbacks throughout his career.

His legacy includes being named Crystal Palace’s Player of the Century and becoming the second-top goal scorer in the history of Arsenal. Since retiring from professional soccer in 2000, Wright has established himself as a revered broadcaster and pundit.

Beyond the pitch, Wright has used his public profile to champion the women’s game and raise awareness regarding the impact of domestic violence on children. In 2023, he was awarded an OBE by Prince William.

Wright described the process of bringing his full story to the screen as a surreal experience that has been a long time coming.

Retelling my story to Tom has also made me realise how much Britain has changed from my parents arriving here on the Windrush, what that meant for me and my brothers, and the experiences that will never leave me. I hope it shows how complicated life can be for a young person and the influence people around you can have – good and bad. My story is one that truly shows how the company you keep can break you down and build you up. There are hard-hitting moments but in the end I want it to give people hope and joy.

The film is being written and directed by Tom Wilton, known for his work on “Muscle,” “Bump,” and “A Love Letter to M.” The production team includes executive producers Stormzy and Akua Agyemfra, as well as producer Stephen Tottingham and Academy Award-nominated producer Sara McFarlane.

Tottingham, who has worked with Wright for over a decade, stated that he feels a responsibility to do justice to the life story of one of Britain’s most-loved personalities.

Casting for the biopic will be handled by Matt Sheppard and Carolyn McLeod CDG, CSA, the team responsible for the BAFTA-nominated feature “Boiling Point.” Official details regarding the cast, title, and release schedule have not yet been announced.

The project is an extension of #Merky Films, a production company launched by Stormzy in 2025 to champion British storytelling and provide a platform for underrepresented voices.

This venture builds upon a decade of community initiatives led by Stormzy, including:

• #Merky Football Careers: Established in 2022 to address racial equity in the soccer industry, this partnership has provided over 60 roles for UK Black Heritage Youth. In 2024, the initiative partnered with Adidas to launch a dedicated online platform.
• #Merky Books: An award-winning publishing imprint that expanded into a two-day literature festival.
• #MerkyFC HQ: A London-based center dedicated to music, football, and gaming.
• Cambridge University Scholarships: A scholarship scheme launched in 2021 in partnership with HSBC, providing 10 students per year with £20,000 for tuition and maintenance. In 2023, Stormzy pledged to fund an additional 36 Black Cambridge students over three years.
