The Strait of Hormuz has remained closed for 100 days, triggering warnings of a deepening energy crisis in Europe, according to reports from multiple outlets including NRC and WNL. The blockade, which began in late March 2026, has disrupted global shipping routes and intensified fears over energy security.

According to NRC, the closure has led to a 40% drop in oil tanker traffic through the strait, a critical artery for 20% of the world’s maritime oil trade. The International Energy Agency (IEA) warned in a statement released June 11 that Europe’s reliance on energy imports could lead to “unprecedented shocks” if alternative supply chains are not secured. “The situation is a harbinger of greater instability,” said IEA Director Fatih Birol, citing rising prices and supply bottlenecks.

The crisis has also impacted shipping companies. Saadé (CMA CGM), one of the world’s largest container firms, announced June 10 that even a resolution to the conflict would not restore pre-crisis market conditions. “The logistics sector is facing structural changes,” said CEO Rodolphe Saadé. “We are not returning to normalcy.”

Annet Koster, director of the Dutch transport regulator KVNR, confirmed the strait’s closure remains “potdicht” (completely shut) as of June 11. “There is no indication of a temporary reopening,” she said, adding that alternative routes through the Red Sea and Suez Canal are overburdened.

Geopolitical tensions underpin the crisis. U.S. President Donald Trump, in a June 11 press conference, reportedly downplayed the risk of further conflict with Iran, stating, “We are close to a deal, and I don’t want to provoke unnecessary escalation.” However, analysts note that Trump’s remarks contrast with earlier rhetoric, where he had threatened “devastating” strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities.

The U.S. Department of Energy has not issued a formal statement on the strait’s closure, but internal documents obtained by Bloomberg suggest agencies are preparing contingency plans. “The administration is evaluating emergency oil reserves and partnerships with Gulf states,” a senior official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The energy crisis has already rippled through European markets. Natural gas prices on the Dutch TTF exchange surged 18% in the week of June 6, while the European Commission reported a 12% rise in industrial energy costs. The IEA’s Birol emphasized that Europe’s transition away from Russian gas has left it vulnerable
